mvmhm Posted March 1, 2014 Share #2 Posted March 1, 2014 Bears a strong resemblance to the Secretary of War flag, except that flag has a Great Seal eagle in the center.... Mark sends

Johnny Signor Posted March 2, 2014 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2014 I don't have all the WW2 issues of Nat'l geographic, but isn't that flag shown in one of them .......................
cllctrtom Posted March 3, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted March 3, 2014 Bears a strong resemblance to the Secretary of War flag, except that flag has a Great Seal eagle in the center.... Mark sends I was thinking the same thing. Do you think it's possible that it was a Brig. Gen. that worked under the Secretary of War?
mvmhm Posted March 3, 2014 Share #6 Posted March 3, 2014 No..Generals have their own flags...I've looked for old Army flags but no joy in Mudville yet....did you check the halyard for any signs of printed markings...they might be very, very faint.... vostoktrading Posted April 3, 2014 Share #7 Posted April 3, 2014 Are there any markings on the hoist? Is it possible to get a close up shot of the grommets or whatever fasteners there are? It looks just like the flag of the Western Society Islands in the South Pacific Ocean (Huahine, Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora-Bora...) pictured here but before we think to close the case, bear in mind that this political entity ceased to exist in 1845 when France took over. I think it's unlikely to be from this time period. If it was produced later I believe it would be considered a rebel flag by the French authorities. Early in WW2 the US had a small Naval & Air base on Bora-Bora. Perhaps it's possible that the flag was from this time period? Tahiti (French Polynesia) declared for the Free French after the Debacle of the Vichy armistice. I notice the middle star is bigger on your flag though...
