Just an idea of the size of the SOS, this photo shows about 1/2 of the tables

I wasn't planning on going down this year, but my wife and I decided to go down yesterday for a couple hours. It was WELL worth my time to go down. Met a couple of members, did some shopping, and picked up some great items.

I will say this, there was a lot more modern militaria this year as opposed to years in the past. I felt prices were pretty reasonable for what I bought.  I spent about half of what I normally do when I go to the SoS, but I was pleased with the quality of the items.

The guys back in the "new" section - over in the smaller back corner seem willing to deal and sell, the other end of the building is quite dead.

Really??? I was in the "dead" section as you call it and it was hopping and moving. Were we at the same show?

Eh, it may be we are just looking for different things....as far quailty, it was over on that side, but so was $$$.   I look for the bargains and the un-researched things, seemed like there was more items in that realm on the other side in the corner area.

The best photo for last.  This is Edgar Harrell 1 of only 317 veterans who survived the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis.

JMHO meeting this man would be worth far more than ANY relic I could or would have been able to buy had I gone.

I didn't buy any militaria which wasn't too much of a surprise as I was looking for particular items, such as an ID Indiana Span-Am officer's uniforms and a few particularly hard to find WWI County Service medals.  I did get to enjoy seeing what some of our forum members picked up and I hope they post them soon.

However, I did attain one of my goals which was to meet LTC Richard Cole, Doolittle's co-pilot on the Tokyo Raid.  I had a great time speaking with him and his daughter and he autographed a copy of Glines' The Doolittle Raid for me.

Here is a photo of LTC Cole

And his autograph

All-in-all I had a great time!

Well, as we speak I am printing out my bording passes for my flights back to California...boy did this show go by fast! Saw some killer stuff, bought some goodies, and met a lot of USMF members in the meantime. For those on the forum wanting a lot of show photos, do not fear.....the traveling USMF photographer is here, I will post my photos tonight and tomorrow. One of the best things for me at the show was talking to the veterans, I was surprised at the amount of people just walking past them....they are a really essential part of our hobby since they are the history we collect and lived through it. Had some nice conversations with them and was even able to take some photos with them.

When it came to fakes and the like, I was surprised by the sheer amount of it there....the amount of Purple Hearts that were bad as well as the put-together uniforms and fake painted helmets, man was that astounding. The side-room was interesting, some nice groups came out of there but I heard from many people that the specific portion of the show was slower than the other portion. Again, overall it was a good show...saw some great stuff and am bringing some home. Now, only 362 days until the next SOS.

Here are SOME of my finds/pictures.  Highlight was the MINT Blue Enameled canteen WITH enameled cup and nice 1942 cover for $125!!!!  Most of these things were upgrades, so I will be selling stuff soon....

That "Franzen" locker looks very familiar. I think it's the one I picked up for a forum member last fall at an auction in southern Michigan and he sold it at the show...small world

My friends bought it off the forum and I picked it up for them at the show.

I found what I thought was a nice matching liner and shell until I checked the webbing in the liner.

And the inside of the liner. Someone thought it would be a good idea to put a VN suspension in. Notice the nice shiny rivets?

Then someone tried to match the paint on the outside of the liner.

That helmet was a real shame, it definitely appeared someone ruined a nice set.

I saw that one on the guys table, the price tag was also very steep for the set....didn't even notice the webbing was messed with.

Do you remember what he was asking? I looked at it, but when I noticed the webbing I didn't even bother to ask.

Plenty of wings to choose from. Priced some glider pilot wings in the process.
