Garand bayonet Greek?

seems that the M1 garand bayonet marked EN_ S & missidentified by porter as guatemalan is acctually a greek army made copy as this is the most common garand bayo you can find in greece.Maybe is not greek made but made by an other foreign factory for the greek army but this is definitely a greek contract.i dont think the guatemalans had ever the will or the industrial ability or the need to make garand bayonets as original american ones were all over the place in latin america for free...the greek defence industry is advanced enough to make tanks APCs & warships & guns...so why not bayonets? logicaly talking an import of hundreds of thousands bayonets from guatemala to greece is not only impossible but also very funny as an idea...conclusion..the guatemalans were not so crazy to make bayonets & the greeks were not so crazy to import them from guatemala 20.000 kilometers away!!!

A collector in Greece contacted me a while back and told me that he thought these bayonets were Greek. We had a little discussion at the time but there wasn't any definitive information to substantiate his thoughts. He did tell me that he had seen several of these bayonets in Greece. My identification is based on information from two different published sources. That's not to say that they are correct, but both are reputable, well known sources. I have been looking for further information on these but so far have not come up with anything. I certainly do not know everything and look forward to whatever additional information anyone could provide.

hi

thanx for relpying

well...i dont come up with a proof either & i dont doubth that u have a deep knowledge abt garand bayonets but a reputable dealer in mons belgium the guy who runs the amsmilitaria.com bussiness has a bunch of those & they are advertised in his new 2008 catalog as greek garand bayonets...i contacted him on the phone for more info & he insists that they are pure greek late 50s early 60s products & the scabbard is unique greek with a metal tip reenforcement only seen on these greek??? bayo's.im not positive or negative but sounds logical to be greek as they came in quantity from greece. Were the greeks so desperate to buy bayonets of inferior quality from guatemala by the thousands paying alot of money to transport them across the atlantic when originals were offered to the greek army by the NATO for free as mutual defence aid...?? i think the only product the greek government may be interested to buy from guatemala is bananas... i bet if these bayos are guatemalan were very rare even in guatemalan use...

if they had some shortage of original US made ones in greece they probably localy produced those ghost EN_S ones & that gives on the final end a logical explaination

but the question remains...were these strange EN_S bayos came from? maybe we'll never know..greek?guatemalan?made in germany or denmark or belgium for the greek or guatemalan army??...

my opinion is... that E_NS bayonet is not necessarily greek made but made somewere in germany or an other country for any possible costumer in the free market...the same bayos sold to greece probably sold to guatemala & to other countries.it is impossible for the greeks to buy bayonets from guatemala but the same impossible is for the guatemalans to buy bayonets from the small greece...so if your bayo found in guatemala then they came from an other strong industrial european country...denmark?germany?holland?belgium? who make those for the international market

an other point of note on these greek-guatemalan bayonets is that while the overall shape & all the details & even the strength of the metal are very very close & comparable to the american originals the quality is not the same good...they are not parkerized or anything...they are simply painted black with paint when new!!!! after awhile if u put it in & out of the scabbard all the paint is taking off & they turn silver

i dont know what to say...i tryied with internet to find some info abt the EN_S bayonets but nothing.... crying.gif
