Steindaddie Posted January 4, 2014 Share #1 Posted January 4, 2014 Phil Everly of the Everly Brothers died today at 74. He and brother Don did a stint in the Marine Corps Reserve. Love their music, and I'm very sorry I never saw them in concert. ~RIP Here is Phil and Don on the Ed Sullivan Show:

LtRGFRANK Posted January 4, 2014 Share #4 Posted January 4, 2014 Like Elvis at the height of their careers the did their duty and served. Unlike the stars of today.
38Driver Posted January 5, 2014 Share #5 Posted January 5, 2014 Like Elvis at the height of their careers the did their duty and served. Unlike the stars of today. Probably a bit unfair to the present day folks in that they aren't required to serve as was the case for the Everlys, Elvis, Jimi Hendrix, John Fogarty etc.
patches Posted January 5, 2014 Share #6 Posted January 5, 2014 I guess it all has to do the fact that there was a Draft back then.
m1ashooter Posted January 5, 2014 Share #7 Posted January 5, 2014 Not trying to stir the pot. Yes there was a draft but these men could have got drafted into the US Army or joined the Navy or Air Force or Army National Guard unit but they chose to be Marines. That says a lot to this son of a Marine. My dad tried to join the Navy right out of HS in July of 45. He was told the war was winding down and they didn't need him. In 1951 he was drafted, while at the draft place they asked for if anyone wanted to be a Marine. My dad stepped forward and to this day he is my dad and a Marine. No one twisted the arms of the Everly brothers. They made the choice they wanted to make and became Marines. He will be missed but their music lives on forever. 38Driver Posted January 5, 2014 Share #8 Posted January 5, 2014 As the son of an Army officer from the same time period who made the decision to go that way, we'll have to agree to disagree about thier deciding to be Marines
ScottG Posted January 6, 2014 Share #9 Posted January 6, 2014 Not sure about the comment regarding this generation of musicians. We have a thread that lists many who served outside of the draft. A few that come to mind are Josh Gracin, country music and American Idol star, USMC, Jason Everman, Soundgarden and Nirvana, Special Forces, Maynard James Keenan, Tool and A Perfect Circle, Army Officer, David Wayne, Metal Church, Army Medic, all volunteers and all served. Look up Everman for a great story. RIP Phil Everly and thanks for the great music. Scott.

During that era, joining the USMCR was considered by many as way of avoiding the draft.....AKA "draft dodging".
