USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 8, 2008 I posted some pictures from Desert Storm under the uniform section but these don't really fit the uniform thread so thought I'd post them I have quite a few so will post until I get tired or think you have all had enough of them. These three are shots of vehicles going through the breach on Day1.

USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted May 8, 2008 These two shots are artillery being fired and a distance shot of the receiving end.
USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted May 8, 2008 Here's a couple shots of what Hell probably looks like. Actually, it's man-made hell, courtesy of the Iraqis. The middle one is actually a shot of the sky over Kuwait City just after liberation. It was taken in broad daylight (about 1500 hrs).

USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted May 8, 2008 Top is me at SOCCENT HQ with Major Dad (Gerald McRaney) during a visit to our base, unfortunately, it's out of focus. Below is Gen Schwartzkopf with coalition troops about a month prior to the start of the war.
USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted May 8, 2008 Two shots of Iraqi POWs. It is against the Geneva convention to show the identity of POWs so I have deliberately fuzzed up the faces, where visible.
USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted May 8, 2008 Here is another shot of \Gen Schwartzkopf and his body guard and Gen Powell and SECDEF Cheney visiting. I don't remember who the AF Colonel shaking hands with Powell was.
USMCRECON Posted May 8, 2008 Author Share #10 Posted May 8, 2008 Last one for tonight. This is two shots taken of the parking ramp at King Fahd Airfield where SOCCENT was based. The ramp hels AC-130s, MC-130s, MH-53s and an assortment of 160th SOAR helos. Both pictures were takem from the catwalk just below the cab of the control tower. In the top one, it's clear. The bottom one, taken a later, shows how quickly a sandstorm can obscure visibility.

USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted May 9, 2008 Following are some shots of Iraqi armored vehicles destroyed in southern Kuwait. This is a tank the Iraqis partially buried in the sand to protect it.....it didn't work out for them. A burning T-55 (I think) Two destroyed T-55s Destroyed truck
USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #15 Posted May 9, 2008 More destroyed Iraqi vehicles.
USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #16 Posted May 9, 2008 Below is a column of Iraqi POWs moving south from the battle area. Most of them were just happy to be alive and they gave little or no trouble. This is part of an assortment of captured weapons taken from or surrendered by the Iraqi POWs. It was one of these Ak-47s that I picked up and carried the rest of the way through the ground war in place of the issued M-16. A Marine Huey lifting off. A Marine grunt platoon thought they had captured an Iraqi 2-star general because the guy had two stars on hie epaulets and sent a helo to pick him up. Unfortunately, They didn't know the Iraqi rank structure.....2 stars = a 1st Lieutenant. This is a booby trap encountered on the southern outskirts of Kuwait City. It was a large steel drum filled with a flammable liquid (kerosene and gasoline mix, I think). It had an explosive bursting charge inside and a wire leading to a nearby bunker. It would have been quite effective on my unprotected Kuwaitis had the Iraqis not abandoned the bunker as out column approached. Destroyed Iraqi truck on the outskirts of Kuwait City. This tank was destroyed by Kuwaiti resistance fighters as the Marine columns approached the city.
USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #17 Posted May 9, 2008 WARNING - THESE ARE GRAPHIC PICTURES. DO NOT VIEW THEM IF SQUEAMISH. Sometimes we collectors focus on the uniforms, patches, gear, and weapons, etc. used in war but forget the human factor. These shots of Iraqi KIAs depict that human cost of war. I apologize in advance if anyone is offended. I've deliberately spaced them down the page quite a way so the warning can be viewed before the pictures come into view. This is all the KIA photos I'm going to post. I'll post some more DESERT STORM photos later this afternoon. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Iraqi KIAs lying near a destroyed tank. Most of another KIA, same area. USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #22 Posted May 9, 2008 Once Kuwait was freed from the Iraqis, the Kuwaitis held a liberation parade. I only participated in part of it but got a couple pictures. It was quite an event and just about every resident of Kuwait City lined part of the parade route. USMCRECON Posted May 9, 2008 Author Share #23 Posted May 9, 2008 SOCCENT was part of the security detail for the return ceremony of the Royal Family from Saudi Arabia. Below are a couple pictures from that event. In front of the troops is a Kuwaiti "hero." Actually, he spent the war in Taif and showed up just in time for the ceremony. Here's another Kuwaiti troop formation. I can't speak for what part this guy actually played. Here is the big guy himself, returning to Kuwait for the first time since 2 Aug 1990. Karl_B Posted May 9, 2008 Share #24 Posted May 9, 2008 Hi Thanks for the great shots. I always like to see one persons personal view of their service time. I note war has not changed much, the equipment has become more modern but the subject and images remain almost the same. Cheers Karl
