Just a short thread on Horse Marines....these guys were formed the winter of 1912 and continued to serve as a detachment with the Peking Legation/Embassy Marines until February 1938. This little grouping dates from their final years...

Another image...riding outside the city walls. The peace treaty with China following the Boxer uprising allowed Legation Guards of all nations the right to conduct exercises outside the city walls and garrsion troops between Peking and Tientsin along the coast, in the event of an emergency. Prior to the Sino-Japanese conflict of 37, the Horse Marines ranged the countryside on long rides...one of their nicknames was "Riders of the Peking Dust."

From their final year...as seen from the city wall....the large building with poles sticking out of it is an ice skating arena...the Chinese built on the grounds of the legation since 1911 for the Marines and their guests...no nails at all!

Dirk,
Just picked up a grouping of these interesting color images a few weeks ago from a late 1920s - 30s vintage scrapbook. This was one of the better ones, relating to the 1920s era China Marines. The caption says "From Dawn to Setting Sun, Marine Occupation in Defense of Shanghai - 1927." Great shots of the "Old China Hands" you posted, reminds me of that famous photo of the jaunty looking Horse Marine Private leaning on the Patton sabre and wearing riding breeches from this era.
