War Effort Magazine Ads

It seems that regardless of what time in history we look at, businesses and advertisers have always found a way to get on board with any movement to push their products.

WWII seemed to be a time of some of the most prolific advertising to let the American public know what a business was doing for the war effort. I've bought several of these over the last three years and have really enjoyed collecting them.

If anyone has some of these, please share them on this thread!

I am impressed by this collection of ads. That kind of artwork was so much better than photos in todays magazines in my opinion

Thanks! I came across these ads by accident one day, found them fascinating and relatively inexpensive so I bought several. They're like mini propoganda posters and significantly less cost!

It was fairly common for those ads to run in several of the major popular magazines of the period. I know for sure that the TD ad ran in the LIFE issue of FEB 21, 1944 because that is the one I copied it from.

From what magazine did the ad in post #3 come from?

Hi, I checked the ad and couldn't find any magazine name notation on the ad or the back page of the ad. Sorry!

Found a few 1942 dated Fortune magazines this weekend which contain some great period artwork and ads. Liked this one with the German Fallschirmjagers. Ad was for an Air Filter manufacturer.

These ads are very cool, and make for great display. The artwork is really fantastic.

The one Western electric one with the tanker & .50 cal I saw the original artwork at a Chicago antique store years ago priced at $1,500

It was a bit damaged from time, but I should have bought it. I always wondered what ad that was for.

I have a small stack of these I keep meaning to frame. Many of the ads came from LIFE and LOOK magazines.

and from Vultee. These ads from Fortune have a bit of a different tone to them as opposed to the ones in Life and others. Most are from manufacturers of heavy machinery, components, chemicals, railroad, ship builders, and aircraft builders, along with the usual liquor, tobacco, and clothing ads one will see. The artwork is varied from stark realism to cubism to impressionistic styles. Most of the artist/illustrators were classically trained and it shows in their work. This could be a subject area of its own.
