Raidercollector Posted December 9, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2013 Dog Company was the heavy weapons outfit of First Battalion, 24th Marines. The majority of the men who made up Dog Company joined their company at Camp Lejeunein the late fall of 1942. Most of them learned to use the heavy Browning M1917 water-cooled machine gun; others trained on the 81mm mortar. They were specialists, but still front-line troops. In early 1943, they traveled to Camp Pendleton, California, where they became Company D, First Battalion, 24th Marines. Dog Company was never deployed as a single unit. In training and in combat, each machine gun platoon was assigned to one of the rifle companies, to be controlled by that company’s commander; the heavy mortars were deployed with Battalion HQ in order to provide support for the battalion as a whole. They served with great bravery during the Kwajalein campaign, but in March of 1944, the upper echelons decided that the heavy weapons companies were no longer needed. Companies D, H, and M of each affected regiment were broken up and the men distributed among the rifle and headquarters companies of their battalion. Mortarmen and headquarters personnel were attached to the Battalion HQ company; each of the three machine gun platoons was assigned to a rifle company. Corporal Glenn Buzzard maintained that, for Dog Company, the First Platoon went to Company A, the second to Company B, and the third to Company C – although each man’s reassignment was subject to the needs of the Corps I received this group from a forum member years back, He was in Dog Company,Heavy Machine gun. They spent 4 hours in the amtrac's before landing, Just circling They where in reserve ,Then a huge explosion happen Where the first assault marines blew up a block house full of torpedoes ,Concrete went flying every where, Hitting marines in the amtrac's. From the explosion 33 marines where killed and over 100 wounded. They could fell the shock. So they went in, Where this Marine landed with his Machine gun company,And advanced to the first Pill box,That had the marines pinned down, Carmen was shooting at the pill box but making no head way, So he picked up the Machine gun to move in closer ,He went over the bank, Than the rest of the company followed to find camen laying there dead, It was very Sad to all his friend to see him there dead. I have letters from 5 of the marines that where there with him ,That wrote to his parents telling them about how he was killed, and what a likable marine he was to all the men in company D,and C. Reading the letters are so sad. It is a fairly large group . Pretty complete. I have some of his Dad's stuff from WW1 to. Enjoy Nick

Raidercollector Posted December 9, 2013 Author Share #20 Posted December 9, 2013 The letters are very touching, I researched 2nd Lt Alexander Santelli , And I found he was Killed on Saipan ,doing a Horrific charge with his men at the Japanese. And another letter I read from John Coutts his friend, Earned the silver star on Iwo and survived the war, all the other guys he was with went on to other battles. They all lived. I researched all of them and with the help or Geoff from his web site on the 24th marines. very touching. This group becomes more and more that I find out on all these guys that where there. It is awesome to read all this research on these find men. The pictures I showed,I have I deed most of them through my 24th marines year book matching pictures,It took some time. Nick
