KASTAUFFER Posted December 6, 2013 Share #1 Posted December 6, 2013 I have had this for a while and have been waiting for 12/7 to roll around before posting it. This is part of a large grouping to a sailor who was wounded in action on 12/7/41 serving on the USS California . His GCM was recovered from the ship and mailed to him in March 1942. Most of the USS California was under water after the attack. The decks were under water. Spending 3 months under water and all of the oil that was in the water is why the planchet is stained black. I restored the medal by adding the ribbon. It had no ribbon when I got it. After the Pearl Harbor attack he became an officer and retired from the USN as a Lt, Cdr. KurtA Posted December 7, 2013 Share #14 Posted December 7, 2013 Outstanding grouping. It's one thing to have a "Pearl Harbor" medal, but to have one that "was there" is really something.

Gary B Posted December 11, 2013 Share #16 Posted December 11, 2013 Kurt, What a great grouping! I especially like the NGCM and the story behind it. Very similar to the Navy GCM that Robin posted as part of his Pearl Harbor PH KIA group that was recovered from the ship. Gary B

zsmith Posted December 6, 2016 Share #20 Posted December 6, 2016 Absolutely incredible grouping. That they actually recovered the GCM months later (AND someone cared enough to get it back to him!) is amazing.
