irish Posted November 12, 2013 Share #26 Posted November 12, 2013 Great photos, even better with the color added. Who is the soldier in the first color pic, right side, all in white in the distance, is that a French soldier with a kepi and sun drape on his neck?? patches Posted November 12, 2013 Share #28 Posted November 12, 2013 Irish, Good catch. It looks to be. Here is a close up. Mike Interesting. He might be a Cairo Policeman, an Egytian, that kepi could be a Fez with a White Havelock cover? plus what appears to be a Billy Club at his side, Plus as far as I seen the French Army and Air Force did not have Uniforms that looked like that. irish Posted November 12, 2013 Share #29 Posted November 12, 2013 Very possible a policeman. It looks as though he is reading a sign or something. The head wear looks to have a bill on it, which is what made me think kepi

Vincennes Posted May 29, 2014 Share #31 Posted May 29, 2014 Here is a slightly earlier photo. No sphinx, but a sailor on a camel with a pyramid in the background. This photo was taken in May, 1931. The Seaman in this picture is William F. Dooley who was a crewman on the USS Tulsa from 1928-1931. Serving both off Nicaragua and China. With his enlistment nearing its end, Dooley was transferred to the USS Pittsburgh which was heading back to the US via the Mediterranean Sea. The USS Pittsburgh left Manila on 21 April 1931 and steamed for Suez en route to Hampton Roads, VA to be decommissioned. Dooley spent some time at tourist stops in Egypt and on the French Rivera at Nice. The USS Pittsburgh arrived in the US on 26 June and was decommissioning on 10 July. Dooley received an Honorable Discharge on July 15, 1931. He later joined the Army during WW2. Paul
askari Posted May 31, 2014 Author Share #32 Posted May 31, 2014 439th Signal Battalion and R Michael and Vincennes, those are some great additional shots, thanks for posting! R Michael and Patches, yes, the man in white is a Cairo policeman in summer uniform, wearing a fez cover. That is a nice rare photo.
Brig Posted May 31, 2014 Share #33 Posted May 31, 2014 Not the pyramids, but since we're dealing with ancient Egypt, here's an image of some Marines in Egypt. Rear marked 1903 at the Catacombs,
