Hello All;

My name is Phil Nordyke. I am the author of six books about the World War II 82nd Airborne Division, including a division history, three regimental histories, one battalion history, and a photographic history. One of my regimental histories was selected by the U.S. Army Chief of Infantry for the captain's course reading list at Fort Benning. Several of my books have been editor's choice selections for the Military and History Book Clubs. I was also a finalist for the Army Historical Foundation's 2005 Distinguished Writing Award.

I am currently working on a book about all of the American recipients of the Navy Cross, Distinguished Service Cross, and Medal of Honor for June 6, 1944 at Normandy as a tribute to the heroism of that day. The book is to be published in time for the 70th anniversary of the invasion. The book will describe the actions of the recipients in the words of eyewitnesses and some of the recipients. As part of the book, I will be including appendices with the citations of each recipient. I am wanting to include a photograph of each recipient if possible. I would like to ask your help in providing photos of these recipients. I have listed all of the recipients below. I have photos of many of the recipients, but some of those photos are not of high quality. I have searched online, including this wonderful forum community and believe that I have exhausted most of the photographs available on the web. I would prefer as dense a files as possible as I have to use 300 dpi files for the book. However, photos can be of lower density, and I can reduce the size to increase the density to 300 dpi. If you do provide an image file, I will credit you in the captions of larger photos and thank you in the acknowledgments section of the book.

Thanks in advance for your consideration of this request and for your assistance. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Respectfully,

Phil Nordyke

Wow...that is quite an undertaking! My book is similar (though the awards are for other things) and I know how much of my life it is sucking away... :D

That said, at least one of these groups exists in the hands of a forum member...I was just fingering it on Sunday, in fact. I will let him contact you though.

Best of luck! I look forward to buying a copy when you are done!

Phil,

That is an incredible list! So much so the moderators should pin this thread!

You're doing a wonderful Job Phil, looking forward to reading your book when it's finished.

If you could get pictures of the original medals that would be great, although I know you are under a tight schedule.

Good luck!

Hi Dave,

I appreciate your reply and the information about at least one group being on the forum. If I can help you with your book, please let me know. I don't know if this is your first book, but if you are looking for a publisher, I would be glad to make an introduction of you to the executive editor of a major military publisher, who was my editor for four of my books. The naval portion of my book is the area where I still need to do the most work. I have all of the award case files for the army recipients from the National Archives, which contain the recommendations and witness statements. I hope to get Tim Frank at the Naval Yard in Washington D.C. to help me with the naval award case files. If you have any suggestions regarding resources for the naval materials, I would appreciate any help you might be able to provide, since that is your area of expertise.

Hi Leonardo,

Thanks for the kind words. I probably will only be able to include single photographs of each of the medals, as I think tracking down all 236 medals would not be possible, and certainly unattainable by the 70th anniversary next June. Hopefully, this book will be useful to collectors of DSC, Navy Cross, and MOH medals from this list as it will contain the eyewitness accounts as well as the citations and hopefully photographs of all the recipients.

Respectfully,

Phil

The service records of U.S. Navy personel will be available at the St. Louis recrod center. The record usuall contains a photograph. If you hire a researcher the files can be obtained within a reasonable amount of time, but it does get a bit expensive. Good Luck.

Hello All;

I apologize, I have been out of town this past weekend conducting book signings at a militaria show. Thanks very much for all of your helpful information. Hopefully, there will folks who have a photo or photos of the recipients who is willing to share them for the sake of this book to honor the heroes of D-Day.

Respectfully,

Phil

Phil, what a great project! For the USN NCDU and Scouts and Raiders portion, I highly recommend that you contact the UDT SEAL Museum in Ft Pierce, and the author of the book "More Than Scuttlebutt", the definitive history of the WWII era UDT program. Her name is Sue Ann Dunford, and she is a walking encyclopedia of info about the program and men. If these NC recipients survived the war, chances are Sue Ann knows them. The WWII UDT program was confusing. The men were trained at Ft Pierce in very small 6 man NCDUs. The men that went to Europe were operationally employed in their NCDU structure. The NCDUs that went to the Pacific were amalgamated into larger Underwater Demolition Teams. Many of the NCDUs have graduation class photos from Ft Pierce. I have attached the photo for NCDU 11, which contains two of your recipients (Bass and Freeman). Based on the ranks in the picture, my guess is that Freeman is in the back row extreme left, and that he was later promoted to CPO. Unfortunately, the picture only identifies the class OIC (R front). The officer front left is Draper Kaufman, the founder of the program. I can verify that class photos exist for NCDUs 43, 45 and 46 as well. Sue Ann can probably identify them by name, and would also have access to the original photos she used in her book. Good luck!

Hi Phil -

My grandfather is one of your Navy Cross recipients! I can provide you with a photograph of Frank M. Hall, 7th Naval Beach Battalion. It may take me a few days to scan it for you. I will need to know how to get it to you as well.

Hi Tom,

Thanks very much for the link to Stuart Brandel's Purple Heart webpage. That is a very good photo. Would you have access to scanning the photo at a higher dpi or a larger size? I can use the photo you have on your webpage, but I would prefer if possible to use a larger photo if one is available.

Respectfully,

Phil
