5th Marine Brigade World War One Patch?

This is claimed to be an original World War One 5th Marine Brigade Patch sewn on a uniform. I am uncertain if it is period or a more modern addition to the unfiorm? Is anyone familar with this particular variation? The threads making up the V are silver and seem to have a metallic sheen (thin silver wire?).

Thanks,

HOWARD LANHAM

I don't like it. I have seen the ones made overseas just after the war, (not sure if Germany or France), but this is not one of them. Not to say the vet could'nt have had this made, but I don't think it is an original. There are way too many repros lately of both this patch and the WWI 2nd division. Semper Fi - Jeff

Howard,

Let make it three who do not like it. May be a later, much later veteran add on but w/o seeing the whole uniform it is hard to say. If you can just walk away. I'm posting a picture taken from a cover of a militaria magazine that features this unit. Though not the best, due to picture size limit on this forum, and the 15th Marine it shows the quality of this patch compared to the one you posted. My recommendation besides the above search this forum for all the information you can and invest in some good reference books before venturing out to buy WWI Marine related items it save money and frustration in the long run.

Here is a close up of the patch on the cover of Military Advisor Volume 22, Number 1 Winter 2010/2011 for comparison to the patch you posted. There are more knowledgeable members on this forum to confirm or deny what I have said about the uniform patch you posted. Again, it helps a lot when we can see the uniform that it is sewn on to provide you a better estimate of the patch.

I will be #4 not to like the patch. The eagle and anchor are not right in shape and dimension on any original I have seen and the V is much to crude for that time period workmenship.
