Hello, I am researching a distant uncle his name was Albert Combs. I have tried to find information about the unit he served in during WW1. There isn't much out there about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Eric

The only thing so far I could find was this, a menu card, they were at Fort Meade Maryland in the spring of 1918. a farewell, where were they going? not to France it would seem.

And the link, it's for sale on E-Bay.

A AEF search came up nothing, unless I missed it, it's not listed in any units Order of Battle, these will be either Army or Corps Troops, or Division. The links are below, if any others would like to go through this again or just to Save to Favs for referance.

Thank you patches, the only thing that I have found in my research was an obituary to another man that served in the same unit. Its kind of odd that there isn't much information. In the last few years of his life my great grandparents that helped raise me and my brother took care of him. Nobody in my family knows much about him. I think he was born in Arizona or Missouri.

Thanks, Eric.

I have found the 324th Field Signal Battalion listed as a non divisional unit. Where they went or who they were assigned to I have yet to find out. Thanks Eric

Ozarkian - I have a booklet entitles ROSTER COMPANY C 324th Field Signal Battalion which lists an Albert Comba of Blue Eye, MO who is I suspect your relative (A is next to S on the keyboard and it would be an easy typo to make Combs into Comba). I did take a look at the Missouri WWI Service Record Cards database that is online and while there are plenty of Combs, no Albert or Comba.

The booklet says he was in first section first detail which, based on the size of a section and a detail, seem analogous to 1st Platoon, 1st Squad. In a WWI Field Signal Battalion, Company C was the wire company and the largest of the companies since most communications were by wire.

Does anyone know where this unit went overseas or did they stay state side during the war. I have been trying to find where but haven't had any luck. Thanks, Eric

As per Post # 3, it appears it was Stateside, as it does not turn up in the Order of Battle of either Armies or Corps of the AEF, please go though the two links to double check, the Armies and Corps especially to see.

My grandfather was a member. I wonder if there is any written material about what they did in WWI? The story I heard about my grandfather is that he was half way to Europe on a ship when the war ended and returned home. His name is Jesse A. Cullison.

324TH FIELD SIGNAL BATTALION.

I have better quality scans of my photos...if anyone would like a better copy just e-mail me. The site has limits to the quality I can upload. My Grandfather Jerry Cullison is top row 2nd person going L to R.

324 Field Signal Battalion (from Order of Battle of the US Land Forces in the World War, Volume 3, Part 3, Zone of the Interior: Directory of Troops):

Oct 1917 Organized at Camp Meade, MD

Aug 1918- Camp Vail, NJ

Nov 1918- Camp Mills, NY

Nov 1918- Camp Merritt, NJ

Nov 1918- Camp Meade, MD

Jan 1919- Demobilized at Camp Meade, MD

No overseas service. The unit was at Camp Mills getting ready to deploy overseas, but did not go. So, maybe he was advanced party if he was at sea or the family story was exaggerated and he was "half way" to going aboard a ship.
