VMF-212 Guadalcanal '42 Poster

Here is a 21.5 x 16.5 inch print I am researching and need information. What I think I know is that this is a Disney related product, probably 1943 and based on the original air tally board presented to Walt Disney by officers of VMF-212 upon their return to the USA from tour of duty. The bulldog was originally designed by Disney for this particular squadron. The original killboard had 94 Japanese kill flags and 2 ships. On the print, the ships and kill flags are rearranged and of course, "by Walt Disney" is added. I added a photo from my collection of the original tally board for comparison. This same print is on p. 43 of Millsteins book, but unfortunately, has no pertinent information associated with it. Can anybody give me details about this piece??

I think it might have been made available as a memento to men in the unit. As we discussed previously, I have no info on this particular item. Sorry.

Thought this would be a good thread to share a VMF-212 Guadalcanal artifact. This is an instrument access panel painted with the 212 Bulldog logo. It was on the aircraft of Doc Everton's destroyed F4F 'Wildcat' at Henderson Field. It was later painted up as a 'Tally' board by the Marine who salvaged it and who gave it to me many years ago. I also have two original photos of the aircraft showing the emblem. I was told this was the only aircraft which had painted insignia on it. Enjoy. Semper Fi.....Bobgee

Just a WAG, but I've attended a number of group/squadron reunions and this is

exactly the sort of signage that would be featured near the podium along with other

items of unit memorabilia, patches, etc.

Here is the original newspaper article, including Doc Everton and Walt Disney. Robert Stout, later KIA, was also one of the officers that was there to present the Tally Board. The Tally Board, like the control panel, has 94 kills, Cool!

Here are some pics of the aircraft part still on the aircraft in 1942, taken at Efate.

One shows Capt Everton in the cockpit; the other shows 2 mechs lounging on the wing. Note the insignia still has the re meatball on the star. Both are original photos.

Thanks for showing the newspaper clipping Pat. I recall asking the head archivist at the Disney Company many, many years ago about the kill board, and whether or not the Archives had that item in its possession. Unfortunately, he said the Disney Archives did not have that item.

And Bobgee...all I can say is that artifact is phenomenal! I love seeing images of Disney insignia designs actually being used. The two photos are superb and then the piece from the plane is just amazing! You made my day with those images! Thanks very much for posting these items (and if you ever want to sell them you know I'd be interested).

Thanks again!

Incredible item with incredible info...thank you all for sharing your knowledge on this piece. I've often thought about how cool it would be to focus on finding WWII-Disney items. I know that they're pretty rare...

jpstout, do you have a big collection of WWII-Disney militaria? Is this something that you've been focusing on for a long time or is it a recent interest? Thanks!

Here's a couple more pics of the 212 insignia. First up is an original squadron photo presented to a BG. Believe this is endorsed by 'Indian Joe' Bauer the MOH Squadron C.O. was MIA following air combat on 15 Nov. 1942. The next is a pic of four 212 mechs after returning from the 'Canal, including the Marine who gave me the aircraft panel, at Chance-Vaught learning about the F4U. Bobgee

All I can say is "WOW" to the instrument access panel. I think "Awesome" would even be an understatement.

Would it be possible to see a close up of the names & tallies as well?

Thanks,

Mac

Thanks for visiting this section of the forum TennesseePusher. I can't speak for Pat, but I can let you know I've been collecting vintage 1930s Mickey Mouse for over 25 years now and Disney World War II Related for around 15-20 years. My collections number aabout 350 1930s pieces and 250 war-related items.

For war stuff I have items from the home front and insignia related, including original Disney-designed combat insignia art, both the preliminary pencil drawings and the finished art. I own several rare and in some instances one-of-a-kind pieces as well. You'll find many pieces from my own collection showcased in this Walt Disney Goes to War forum.

Besides this forum, I also maintain a blog on the topic at toonsatwar.blogspot.com, a Facebook group called "Disney and the war" and I just recently published an e-book on Amazon titled "Service With Character. The Disney Studio and World War II." I also loaned The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco 48 pieces from my collection for display.

Thanks for stopping by!

  • 5 months later...

Missed this the first time. That F4F panel is incredible. I have been hunting around for something similar since I started collecting. They are just nearly a impossible thing to find. Congrats, and thanks for sharing!!
