Patchcollector

Hi all,

My first post in this category as I am mostly into collecting patches and badges, but along the way I have picked up a blade or two when I have the chance and one catches my eye.Which brings me to this piece;when I saw this I liked it right away because I felt it had a good balance of being used but not abused,as I like my edged weapons a bit "salty",but not too much.Anyway, here are the sellers pics;I will post more when I receive it.

You can't lose with a PAL-36. Good, solid, functional knives. Get 2-3 life times of use out of them. SKIP

Yes Skip, you are right.I have been doing some online research about this model and all seem to hold this knife in high regard."Tough, durable, and dependable" seem to be in most of the descriptions from owners. That's probably why, although not military issue, many soldiers chose this as their blade of choice.

Actually I have read that many were issued. I couldn't say what units, but some received these. SKIP

Thanks for that info Skip, that's great news!I was reading an article on the Bladeforum I think telling about how at the beginning of the war all the Government had was basically bayonets so they started procuring whatever knives they could find to give to the troops, but I was'nt sure if the Pal-36 was one of them.

Nice example . Most of the ones Ive encountered had the bright blade .

Thanks, yes I've seen the bright bladed examples. The sellers' description for mine say it has a "blued blade"

Here is the entire sellers' description that I copied:

You are looking at a WWII Original PAL RH-36 Fighting Knife & Sheath * Nice Example. Fantastic original sheath

*BLADE: 6 1/4" long, very sharp

*OVERALL LENGTH: 11"

*HANDLE: Leather and fiber multi-spacers

*FITTINGS: Aluminum

*CONDITION: Very-Fine/used, blade is real nice and still retains about 75% of it's original blueing, very solid knife, sheath is solid and really nice

BTW,tonight I just got two other knives from the same seller, one a Western Shark, and another Japanese made Vietnam war era fighting knife.I'll post them ASAP.

Later production of these were Parkerized and when somewhat worn may appear to be bluing. I believe all of those purchased / issued by the military were either bright or Parkerized.

Nice example. No military edged weapon collection should be without one.

Bill

Thanks Bill,I'm new to collecting the edged weapons, and I thought I would start with the basics;a Pal 36,Western Shark, both of which I recently acquired, and now I'll be hunting for a Cattaraugus 225Q.

Later production of these were Parkerized and when somewhat worn may appear to be bluing. I believe all of those purchased / issued by the military were either bright or Parkerized.

Thanks for that info Bayonetman. At the risk of sounding dumb,I have to ask you;does mine look blued or Parkerized?

Got da Penny

You said a mouthful when you said ** Cattaraugus 225 ** ---------------- Personally my "favorite" over the RH-36

But, finding one without a "Damaged" Leather handle will be the challenge !!

That is a nice knife, congratulations.

Thanks,I'm happy to have it.I came upon it by accident;I was on eBay looking for patches and noticed that the seller had a lot of nice looking knives offered too,

so I bid on some and the rest is history..

Regarding your earlier question. It looks like a Parkerized blade to me.

I'm not too sure there is such a thing as a Cattaraugus 225 with an original handle that isn’t scuffed up. So many of them seem to be marked up so similarly that I’ve often wondered if it wasn’t deliberate. I know that others have speculated towards that.
