disneydave Posted June 25, 2013 Share #1 Posted June 25, 2013 My book on Disney's involvement in World War II is now available as an e-book on Amazon. It's a revised edition of the book Toons At War, which I self-published 13 years ago! The new title is: Service With Character. The Disney Studio and World War II. The book contains 14 chapters, 10 appendices, end notes, 385 images (of which 340 are in color), and numbers some 88,000 words in length! Please click on the link and check it out: http://www.amazon.com/Service-Character-Disney-Studio-ebook/dp/B00DKS61TS/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1372137269&sr=1-2&keywords=disney+insignia

disneydave Posted December 20, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted December 20, 2013 The print version of this book is currently being reviewed by reps at The Walt Disney Company. If all goes according to plan, the print version will be published in February 2014.

Brig Posted December 20, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 20, 2013 Keeps us informed, I'd be interested in a print edition Does Disney need to endorse it for it to be printed?

disneydave Posted December 21, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted December 21, 2013 Thanks Bobgee and Thor. Brig - the company lawyers like to make sure you're not using any images without their permission - usually images of Walt, which they own the rights to, images of actual art. and other images they might deem offensive, like a Disney design featuring a stereotyped Japanese soldier, for example. I own almost all of the items pictured in the book...some 300 images. The remainder come from friends' collections. I have permission to use all the images so there shouldn't be a problem as they are all of collectibles. We'll see what happens. The publisher told me he wants the book to be black and white. Color would be too cost prohibitive. He said we will have a website to show all the images in color. If you want to read the history of the studio or the background related to all the collectibles, you have to purchase either the e-book or the print version. bobgee Posted December 21, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 21, 2013 Get another publisher! B&W in print will suck the life out of these great insignia. My 20cents! Bobgee
Brig Posted December 21, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 21, 2013 I have to agree with Bob...color is the way to go, these are cartoon related...color speaks volumes! I think their cost-effective strategy is going to result in more downloads than book purchases. Or at least a color photo section of the best stuff
disneydave Posted December 22, 2013 Author Share #10 Posted December 22, 2013 We've crunched the printing costs out and because there are so many images (over 350) it would cost over $50 / book just to produce. Add in some profit and I'll only end-up selling a dozen copies. Even Amazon takes advantage of having so many images by charging a 'delivery" fee for the e-book as it is over a certain Mb in size. I am charged an additional almost $2 every time someone buys the e-book because of all of the images. The decision has been made to go with black and white. Color images will be on the book's associated website and they are available in the e-book version. If you view the images on the website and want the item's history or the back story you'll need to purchase the book. The images have already been posted all over the internet anyhow...they are on this site, my own blog, and the Disney and the war Facebook group. I've thought long and hard about this and unfortunately the cost of color printing is really expensive. Doesn't matter what publisher you go with. Brig Posted December 22, 2013 Share #11 Posted December 22, 2013 You have a point, it is a narrow niche, even with reference books fetching upwards of 100 bucks you'd have a much more narrow market

disneydave Posted January 5, 2014 Author Share #15 Posted January 5, 2014 Once set up, they will have their own webpage. Probably ServiceWithCharacter.com as I already own that domain name. The information accompanying the image on the webpage will be minimal. That's because it will be a supplement to the actual book. The image might have the corresponding reference number for the black and white entry in the book and maybe just a couple of words for the caption. But to really find out what you're looking at you need to buy the book, or, figure it out yourself...LOL. The images on the webpage will also bear a watermark. My understanding is the main Disney Legal Department person will be reviewing our request this Monday, January 6, 2014. Here's hoping.
