I am researching Seaman 1st Cl. Eugene J. Johnson, USN (enlisted in Des Moines, Iowa, Sept. 17, 1935), who I have tracked to the re-commissioning of the USS Calhoun (DD-85/APD-2) on Dec. 11, 1940, but afterward his trail goes cold, and I cannot find him listed on any other muster for WWII.
The Calhoun was bombed and sunk by Japanese planes off Guadalcanal on Aug. 30, 1942; of her complement of 100 officers and enlisted men, 51 men were killed and 18 were wounded. I have been told that nobody named Eugene J. Johnson appears on any WIA or KIA lists for the War. Also, I found the following obituary online, and strongly believe is the same man:
"Eugene J. Johnson, 92, died in Knoxville, Iowa on Oct. 28, 2005. He was born April 9, 1913 in Des Moines, Iowa to Glen and Lela Johnson. He was a WWII US Navy Veteran. No survivors are listed."
Is it fair to assume that Johnson would have remained on the Calhoun from her re-commissioning until being sunk off Guadalcanal? Is there any way of obtaining a crew list of the Calhoun for August 1942?
Many thanks in advance for all assistance,
