digi-shots Posted April 29, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 29, 2013 Can anyone help date these wings...? They are hallmarked AMICO and have a clutch type pin on the backside. I think I read that AMICO continued making wings up through 1946. I've also attached a close up of the clutch pin. It appears to be soldered and doesn't look like newer clutch pins. I've compared the length to a pair of newer clutch backs and these pins do look shorter than the new ones. Thanks again for all your help!
tomcatter Posted April 30, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 30, 2013 This is a nice 1940s pair of Naval Aviator wings. They were worn by USN Pilots. AMICO (AMerican Insignia COmpany) was a good wings maker from WWII. They were made of solid sterling (=silver 925) and filled with a thin coating of 10k gold. They were also heavier than others USN Aviator wings: 18 grams (on average USN Pilot wings weights about 10-12 grams).
