shrapneldude Posted April 22, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 22, 2013 I think those buttons are state militia or state guard. Can't recall offhand which state, but I have seen them before.
Wyonative Posted April 22, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 22, 2013 If memory serves me correct it would be New Jersey. The style is popular from the 1840s- 1890s for various militias and state and national guard units. Also used up to this current day with Some military academies. Jacket to me from photos and buttons would be Post civil to Spanish american war era. Just my thoughts though. Ryan

Patriot Posted April 22, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 22, 2013 Those are indeed New Jersey state seal buttons. Based on that Horstmann backmark, these buttons were made between 1893-1935. In my opinion, this is a militia uniform from the mid to late 1890's.

GIl Sanow Posted November 20, 2013 Share #10 Posted November 20, 2013 With the chest frogging, the owner may have been a bandsman of some sort. States did not always follow federal uniform regulations. I am really curious what the collar insignia stands for.-- is the photo reversed or are the letters backwards? You might try going to a large city library in NJ and seeking out the NJ State AG's report or uniform regs during that era. I did that with the Ohio NG regs and learned a lot. You might also contact the NJ NG Museum at Sea Giurt, NJ for assistance. G
BEAST Posted April 1, 2015 Share #11 Posted April 1, 2015 If you haven't done so already, you might contact the New Jersey National Guard Museum. Their link is shown below.http://www.nj.gov/military/museum/
