USMCR79 Posted January 15, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2007 Greg, I just picked this up today at the Flea Market. It looks like a variation, but not described in your posting. Can you tell me anything about this...also notice the sheath how it comes to a point. No markings on the sheath. Thanks, Bill
Greg Robinson Posted January 15, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 15, 2007 That appears to be the Union Cutlery AKA "KA-BAR" knife that had no branch of service markings. So it will be marked either "KA-BAR/ OLEAN NY" on blade or the later mark, as is on your example, "KA-BAR". They look the same but for two pommel attachment variations which are heavy pommel peened on to a round blade tang or the later heavy pommel peened to a rectangular blade tang. I have no idea why the USMC or USN allowed them to make this version knife but believe both branches of service used them although most I've seen came in unmarked leather scabbards which would indicate USMC. Your scabbard was probably made for a different type knife and got mated with a "k-bar" sometime after manufacture. Could have happened anytime.
