We are proud to announce the upcoming release of “Yankee Air Pirates – U.S. Air Force Uniforms and Memorabilia of the Vietnam War”. The 320-page book includes 900 photos, and will be available on May 28 from Schiffer Publishing.

The book, divided into seven chapters, is the result of several years of work, trying to put together interesting items, photos and information, from the early stages of the war to the departure of the last airmen. The first of three volumes will cover the following fields:

- Command & Control

- Tactical Control

- Forward Air Control

- Rescue

- Electronic Warfare

- Air Police/Security Police

- Uniforms: this chapter covers flight jackets and flight suits, jungle and utility uniforms, headgear, footwear, gloves, etc.

and Overblog: http://yankeeairpirates.overblog.com/ where we will post the last updates as well as additional items that arrived too late for the deadline of the first volume.

The project would not have been possible without the help of many fellow forum members. A warm thank you to them!

Looks like a great book. One I would be interested in purchasing. Can you show more of the interior pages?

Thanks for the nice comments!

We have not seen the finished book yet, so we cannot show anything! Schiffer should make a few pages available for promotion purposes, and we will gladly share them here.

I am currently visiting François in Thailand. A great opportunity to dive off Koh Tao, one of the most beautiful spots in Southeast Asia. Besides the superb coral reefs, we had the pleasure to explore the wreck of HTMS Sattakut, which started her career as LCI-739(L) in the US Navy, and earned three battlestars during the Pacific Campaign.

A very impressive experience:

Regarding Yankee Air Pirates Volume 1, we have good and bad news. Good news first: the book is now available for pre-order on Amazon, for only $65.26:

And the bad news: the release has been postponed to June 28th, exactly one year after we delivered the manuscript. Since we have not reviewed the book design yet, a May 28th release seemed rather unlikely indeed.

Well it gives us more time to relax and enjoy the sight! See you all soon!

We have just finished reviewing the PDFs sent by the publisher in their final format. The result is really great! We are really satisfied with the work done by the graphic designers, but we asked for dozens of minor corrections: typos that we had never seen before although we had triple-checked everything, and some page layout changes. The main issue with Schiffer Books is that text and matching images are sometimes on different pages, making reading more difficult. We have tried to adress these problems as much as possible, without asking for too many changes. In the end we should have a great book!

We also added an index, which should prove really useful for readers. Unexpectedly, this was a huge work, delivered in less than a week to meet the deadline. Now we know the real meaning of sleep deprivation!

The release date has been postponed to August 28th. We think it will not move again, as the book is now almost ready for printing.

You can check it out on the all-new Schiffer website:

We hope we will be able to show you sample pages on this thread in the next few weeks :)

Well that's sad news. Amazon still states it will be available on August 28th, but the publisher probably knows better. Legally they cannot push it beyond December 30th, but I hope this is the last time they postpone it :(

We asked Schiffer a few days ago. I guess they have only a handful of employees to deal with their thousands of authors, so we will probalby have to wait a little more to get an answer.

Thanks for the update. I pre-ordered a copy back in June (?) but Amazon haven't contacted me at all since then, so I assume the order still stands?

Hi there,

I experienced the same problems with Schiffer, with my book. Even after reading the second PDF (after the first corrections I made), I still found errors I corrected the first time and that were overlooked. Often words were added, giving a whole other meaning to the text...

The major problem to me always was postponing the book's release. This happened up to 4 times, the last time (on August 2nd) after they found a minor error they made themselves just prior to the printing (the book was off for printing mid-July). It was immediately delayed with 2 months... The first release date was April 2013. Now it will be somewhere in October 2013.

Last week, Schiffer assured me to have the book very soon now.

However, I have to say that book designers made a great job after all. A great result when you consider there are 320 pages, lots of text and 565 photos in it.

I really hope for you the release date won't be delayed too much. It's really disappointing and you can't do anything about it...!

Congratulations with the upcoming book!!

Kind regards

Hans

Thanks for for your input Hans, it looks like we are in the same boat! Well at least they seem to have answered your emails, you must be a VIP! :D

VIP... as in 'Very Intensive Problem'?? :D:D

You have no idea how many e-mails I've written with questions I had (often the same questions). You'll get an answer, but often you have to wait a long time.

Hans
