Custermen Posted January 24, 2015 Share #5 Posted January 24, 2015 Have you identified the Black patch with Yellow piping and silver device? It looks almost like a collar patch for an Italian uniform but the device looks like Luftwaffe rank insignia "wing". Never seen any that shape or with that device. The Star is the National insignia worn on the collar of Italian uniform. Maybe the star should be on the patch instead of the "wing". Oh! That looks like Italian Air Force buttons. RANDALL 1953 Posted January 24, 2015 Share #7 Posted January 24, 2015 Nice grouping you have. IC 2nd class looks nice. Just curious if the Panzer assault badge has a maker mark on the back.
Fixbayonets! Posted January 27, 2015 Author Share #8 Posted January 27, 2015 Thanks for the comments, glad you guys like this group! Custerman, the black patch with yellow piping is an Italian collar tab. I suspect that the U.S. veteran added the Luftwaffe gull to the tab and it does not belong there. I also believe he added the pips to the Waffen SS shoulder boards to dress them up a bit. Randall 1953, the PAB is maker marked on the reverse, here is a photo........... Thanks, Rob

I'm not sure about an SS epaulet but I once had an epaulet with NCO trim similar to the lower one with the "33". It had pips and it also was pointed instead of rounded. I finally sold it as I only had 1. Was that Me-109 shot down in Italy? I will have to look up that squadron insignia. It may have been shot down in Sicily. Most of the Luftwaffe squadrons pulled out of Italy after Salerno. The Germans used mainly Italian pilots after that.
