I recently picked up a grouping of letters from Ebay - the seller just took one group picture of the eleven different letters, and did't mention anything about who wrote them or what units they belonged to. The opening bid was $5, so I put in a bid of $6 and I won the lot for $5 plus shipping. Well, I got the letters in, and they are written by about four different people - no great combat content, but they are interesting. There is one in particular that I wanted to share - it is a letter written by Mollie Mottola to her husband Jerome. He served in the H&S Company, 649th Engineer Battalion in Europe. Here is the letter:

"Merry Christmas" Nov. 19 - 1944

Hello Sweetheart:

Your little baby is writing this letter in "our" bed. It feels goog to sleep in one but its very funny I miss you there too. I am sleeping on your side with your pillow and before I go to sleep I say a prayer & kills your pillow - It sounds silly and I know you will laugh Sweetheart, enclosed you will find a money order for twenty five dollars. It isn't much and you must promise me something or else I will be hurt. You must take this money and on your day off take "Moe" & yourself to the nearest place & have a good time. Not with girls now for I will brain you. Please, Please don't put it away in the saving plans. Won't you be a good boy and do me this one favor? You probably would like to know what I intend to do for the holidays. You may not like the idea but I am going out to get drunk. The only time I had too much and that was back in the year of 1941. Remember? I was knocked out cold the minute I put my head down on your lap at Dean's house. Don't worry because I am going out with girls. I could go out with boys for so many have asked me to go out with them to enjoy myself. But I rather by by my self or with girls. The girls called me crazy and give me names such as a dead duck, old relic & etc. Just because I won't go out with your kind of sex. Sweetheart, I can't go out with no one. How could anyone take your place and I can't enjoy myself without you. I am very much in love with you & I can't think of going out with anyone but you. They think I'll be the "loser" in the end by being so goody. I told them I didn't care at least I could proudly say to my husband that I am true to him then some of you girls could say. They claim that you are going out whenever you could & have a good time with girls. My answer was I know my husband, and if he does let him have a good time because they don't know from one day to another what will happen to them. Since I feel the way I do they put it in such away that I should buried myself. Sweetheart darling, people are such a funny thing If you want to be good they can't stand it & if you want to be bad they still can't stand it. The world is allright but its the people in it. I know that someday when this war is over and you come back to me - Then I know that you will continue on to give me the happiness for the future years. Your such a wonderful husband and indeed I am proud to have you. Honey it is going to be the third Christmas that I am without you. That is why I am so blue. I am going to be very lonely for I have no one but my mother. I never thought I could love anyone the way I do for you. I'll be waiting here for you on Concord Ave. with open arms. So long my husband soldier boy and please be at all times my little goody boy. I want you to be different than other men. If you get what I mean. Love & kisses to you always, Your wife Mollie.

Looks like they may have had a long life together. There is a listing of cemetary records with both Jerome and Mollie's name. It's in the Saint Mary of the Lake Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleum, Lakewood, Ocean County, New Jersey.

Mollie passed away in 2007, Jerome may still be alive, as he does not show up in the SSDI. Take a look at his NARA record. When he went in he only had two years of high school education. However on a different website, in 2004 his name shows up as a contributor to a college in New Jersey. Sounds like they did all right together!
