Mark Leonard asked me to do a thread on Naval Aviator ID cards, and thought it was a great idea. In this thread I am going to post all of the different types of cards I have , in chronological order .

Naval Aviator ID's were presented once training was complete and served as a " pilots license" while in the Navy. They seem to be fairly scarce, even the WWII dated ones.

I will start off with the 1st and best one:

ID Card and wallet to NAVAL AVIATOR # 141 dated 1917. He also earned the Navy Cross in WWI. This is the earliest ID I have seen in private hands, but am hoping someone here on the forum can post an even earlier one.

And the last one, while not a pilot, is a rare example.

US Navy FLIGHT SURGEON ID card and Wallet # 655 dated 1944 . The low number should indicate how scarce these are. He later served as a Flight Surgeon to USMC Fighter squadrons.

Terrific subject matter Kurt. You and the others have posted some outstanding examples. I've never seen a USN Flight Surgeon ID...and the Enlisted Aviator ID is truely top-shelf stuff!

Here's Naval Aviator # P543.

Dated November 1942, this ID was produced a month after Kurt's ID illustrated in post #9. It's signed bt the same Commandant at N.A.S. Pensacola.

George Jewett was a career Navy man. He was a Naval Aviation Observer (Radar) in 1945, then became a Naval Aviator after the war, hence the two ID's. Not sure why his N.A.O. identification has two dates, 28 September 1945 and 29 April 1947?
