Salvage Sailor Posted January 24, 2019 Share #904 Posted January 24, 2019 First Special Service Force SSI worn as a combat patch by Louisiana Adjutant General Raymond Huff. He is also wearing the FSSF shoulder cord which is better seen in the second picture. Any idea what the shield crest is on the necktie worn by the man in the suit? patches Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #906 Posted January 25, 2019 A Staff Sergeant Aubery O'Donnell, a Training NCO at Ft Ord Basic Training establishment in late 69, formerly as we see of one of the battalions of the 1st Brigade (Abn) 1st Cavalry Division (not showing in the 1st Bn 8th Cav's rosters,so in one of the other two, 2nd of the 8th Cav or the 1st of the 12th Cav). Of addinational interst is the wear of subdued collar ranks with full color shoulder patches, something we're begging to see more and more as the years go on in various books and online sites, normally the full color sleeve ranks were worn, with the subdued collar pin or sew on ranks seen when subdued shoulder patches start to be worn in late 68 into 70. The First Air Force did not serve outside the continental U.S. in World War II. This might be the organizational patch for a unit shes in in the 1st AF, and wears on the other side a Overseas one, remembering how the AF did it with the combat patches, they for whatever reason wore them on the left shoulder. seanmc1114 Posted January 30, 2019 Share #914 Posted January 30, 2019 The 31st Infantry Division is not necessarily a rare combat patch, but I don't think I have ever seen one before. Here it is along with the 7th Infantry Division and 82nd Airborne Division.
seanmc1114 Posted February 4, 2019 Share #915 Posted February 4, 2019 I felt certain one or both of these had already been posted in this topic, but I can't find them anywhere. At any rate, this photo shows Lt. Martin Hammer as he is being presented the Distinguished Service Cross by President Johnson in 1966. Due to his age, the 82nd Airborne Division patch would have to be from the Dominican Republic. Since the U.S. intervention in the Dom Rep began April 30, 1965 and Lt. Hammer earned his DSC with the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam on May 6, 1966, he served in two different combat zones in less than a year. https://valor.militarytimes.com/hero/5150
patches Posted February 5, 2019 Author Share #916 Posted February 5, 2019 24th Corps Combat Patch in 1987, no doubt for serving in 24th Corps Artillery as this was taken at Ft Sill OK, a OSUT Artillery unit commander I would think (can catch a glimpse of the Lt Col subdued rank). He was in the 17th Abn Div in WWII, the 3rd Inf Div in Korea, and the 101st Abn Div and the 1st Inf Div in Vietnam, this foto was when he was on that 2nd Tour in the Big Red One as C.O. 2nd Battalion 2nd Infantry.
