Mitch Posted January 17, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 17, 2013 Hi , I wanted to post this helmet from my collection. I don't know the model. The helmets original owner was in the USMC in the 1st MAW. The artwork was done in Japan. The helmet bag has a nice large 1st MAW Japanese made patch on it . His gloves are dated 1965 . That was at the end of his service. Any info on the hemet appreciated. northcoastaero Posted January 18, 2013 Share #7 Posted January 18, 2013 The helmet is a USN/USMC APH-5 modified with sawtooth bayonet oxygen mask receivers on the sides. The front and back fitting pads should be switched around.
northcoastaero Posted January 18, 2013 Share #8 Posted January 18, 2013 The gloves are probably the B-3A type. I will do more research on the squadron.
Mitch Posted January 19, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted January 19, 2013 Hi NCA, Thanks for info on the helmet. I'm not sure what you mean about the pads but I know it was a 1 owner helmet and was in the bag since the 60's. Let me know exactly what you mean and maybe I can swap them around. As to your next post, yes they say Type-b-3a inside . Thanks again for the info. Regards, Mitch The helmet is a USN/USMC APH-5 modified with sawtooth bayonet oxygen mask receivers on the sides. Bebel Posted January 19, 2013 Share #10 Posted January 19, 2013 Very beautiful APH-5. I would believe that this one came from a helicopter crew member due to the chin strap and the art work style. I hope that someone can find the unit and tell us. Franck

northcoastaero Posted January 20, 2013 Share #12 Posted January 20, 2013 The tan leather pad that is placed at the neck is usually the pad that is for the forehead and vice- versa. That is how they were originally issued. Aircrew preference may have switcheed the pads around? Hope this helps.

northcoastaero Posted January 20, 2013 Share #15 Posted January 20, 2013 According to my research on wikipedia.org, it appears the squadron is HMM-265 Dragons. HMM-265 Dragons was a part of MAG-24 and MAG-36. HMM-265 Dragons flew the UH-34 helicopter and later the H-46 Sea Knight helicopter. Helmet most likely from the UH-34 era? Mitch Posted January 22, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted January 22, 2013 Hi, Thanks alot for the info. I definately know he either piloted or co-piloted a helicopter. As far as the pads again. If you look at the photo of the inside of the helmet, you can see the wear to the pad and edge of the helmet that matches. Either he changed them or he got it that way back then.
