After the untimely death of Huell Howser I found out that his popular series "California's Gold" was donated to Chapman University and digitized, and I sought out and found this old show from 1992. It's a visit to Camp Lockett in San Diego County, where the 10th, 11th and 28th Cavalry regiments lived and trained in the 1940s. Huell speaks with some of the veterans at a reunion there. It's great the way they speak of their pride in being a part of the horse cavalry.

I always liked the way this segment ended, with the black and white footage fading out to the current landscape.

OK, that link's not working any more. Try this (starts at 12:01): http://blogs.chapman...rnias-gold-302/

In the event that stops working, "Lockett" should work in the search box.

Thanks so much for finding that! I had searched in vain this week for one of his shows about an old California military post. The one you found is especially great because I have been there many, many times. It is right on the Mexican border and the camp housed Italian POW's during WWII. Nearby Tecate, Mexico had a popular Italian restaurant whose owner - it was said - had escaped across the border from Camp Lockett.

I grabbed a couple of screen shots from the video:

By the way, that show is 21 years old, but the camp still looks like it did then with the old WWII (and before) buildings, some in use, some empty and all quite weathered.

Hi, yes thanks foir posting that MPage,

here's a great bit of film showing the training and rideing at Camp Lockett, some of the comments from those filming and nearby can be heard....... quite funny!

Just change the uniforms and it could have been filmed in 1880!

cheers,
