Interesting article. I guess it could be possible, still there are some questions that remain unanswered.

the signature on the letter is really JFK? I cannot make anything out there that even resembles John F. Kennedy, let alone President Elect as stated on the letter from the JFK Library.

If it's true (?) maybe they were on a beer-run. Don't laugh, Arleigh Burke himself was chewed out by Bull Halsey for sending a ship to Australia mainly to get booze for the boys.
This is just a theory.
