TrentRock Posted February 26, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2008 Which one (if any) are WWII Era? Which one is older and how can you tell? I like the one with the flat, metal pommel the best But The one with the plastic pommel is closer to WWII Era I think???? The one with the plastic handle was a rust pit when I got it off EBAY for 10 bucks I cleaned it up a little with butcher block oil and some #0000 steel wool I don't have Coles book III yet I'm gonna try and find one online tonight I have heard good things about it on the knifeforum I am on I don't have any old Kinfolks ads or catalogs to cross reference them either TRENT
doyler Posted February 27, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2008 IMO they are both WW2.Just variations.Maybe the use of plastic was an attempt to conserve steel or to eliminate the problem some knives exhibit of the chemical reaction to leather and steel.I see knives from time to time where there is a lot of rust and rot from the leather touching the steel. The Western Cutlery knives come to mind as I see a lot of the L77 or L76 stillettos showing bad leather grips where the steel tang runs through the leather handle.Just my thoughts. RON I agree I actually bought some Neetsfoot oil and rubbed it on the leather handle on the plastic pommel one The handle had some damage...Like it was sitting in a puddle of water for a week The neetsfoot did "rejuvenate" the handle but it darkened the color a bit I have been told that neetsfoot will degrade the leather in the long run So far I haven't noticed any degradation of the leather handle though...... doyler Posted February 27, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2008 I have been told that the neetsfoot oil being a petroleum base product shouldnt be used. The oil is said to degrade thread and I was told it wasnt a good choice for leather jackets, shoes etc.I have used liquid glycerin saddle soap,Pecards leather treatment and Black Rock leather treatment.A lot of guys swear by Black Rock. You use to find it in western and saddlery shops.
