manayunkman Posted November 28, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 28, 2012 In 1992 I worked in Carlisle Pennsylvania. One day on the way to work a van comes off the exit ramp a ways in front of me. At the next red light I pulled up behind them and saw a sticker with a red tailed P-51. License plate Virginia and 5 gentlemen inside. In front of the frog and switch co they pulled into a gas station. I pulled in behind them and went over to the van and asked Are you gentlemen Tuskegee Airmen ? Yes they were and a conversation ensued. They were going to the Carlisle War College for the Black Americans in WW2 Conference. They gave me a lunch ticket for the banquet in which General Benjamin Davis was the key note speaker. I went and sat with some "Triple Nickel" and T.A. guys. It was unreal and such a great time. One of the men, who happened to live in my town, called me the next day. Richard Moore was a truck driver for the 10th Air Force in Burma. He "drove amo on the Ledo Road". I hope you enjoy this group And please leave a comment.

manayunkman Posted November 28, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted November 28, 2012 Assorted items including two theater made patches And theater made ribbon bars. Mr Moore was a heavy set guy during WW2 and his jacket is a 44R. Unfortunately no name in the jacket but there is in the hat.
manayunkman Posted November 28, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted November 28, 2012 When Cpl. Moore crossed the equator, on the Billy Mitchell, he went through Neptune's hazing ceremony and his head was shaved. Check this out. Who gives up this type of thing ? manayunkman Posted November 28, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted November 28, 2012 Here are 2 programs from the The Black Americans In WW2 Conference one is autographed ( by who ? ) and the other has phone numbers. I lost these programs for 20 years after putting them in a safe place when I got home that day. The frustration I had when I could not locate them because of the phone numbers. Timberwolf Posted November 28, 2012 Share #18 Posted November 28, 2012 Awesome grouping! About a month or two ago I got to speak with an African-American veteran who did the same job as your guy, except he was in the ETO. Really interesting to hear some of his stories. KurtA Posted November 28, 2012 Share #19 Posted November 28, 2012 Great grouping and even better story as to how you stumbled upon it all. (I must admit I was a bit nervous as I began to read your story thinking it was heading towards you 'jacking the van at the gas station.) I like the theater-made ribbons on the coat. manayunkman Posted November 29, 2012 Author Share #25 Posted November 29, 2012 Awesome grouping! About a month or two ago I got to speak with an African-American veteran who did the same job as your guy, except he was in the ETO. Really interesting to hear some of his stories. I have had the opportunity to be in many African American households and it is very rare to find a family who still has anything left. I have found more Civil War groupings that WW2 African American groupings. This one was one of the most complete I ever found. Glad you like it.
