78CARg Posted November 3, 2012 Share #1 Posted November 3, 2012 As most of you know I frequent the local thrift stores. While I have found quite bit of stuff none of it has been that spectacular. That all changed a few days ago when I saw this in the glass case they have by the register. I asked the lady to see it figuring it was another family photo album. I was astonished when I opened it to see it chocked full of WWII era Navy pictures. Once I got it home and had a better chance to look at it, I learned it belonged to Leo Simonton of Purdum, Nebraska. He sailed on the attack transport USS Sherburne. The album contains 96 pictures, most are of him and his fellow sailors, but the album also contains some family pictures, a few of which show a family member possibly a brother in his Army Class A's. The 2 best pictures in my opinion are in the back, they show US GI's landing on a beach, possibly Okinawa. Ok enough description, here are the pics. It still saddens me how little respect people have for not only the items like this, but the men themselves who sacrificed so much to protect the freedoms we take for granted. Not a problem on the scans, I will get them posted in the next few days.

And your right it does contain some good details. I should also have enough info to request his records. I'm still debating myself if I should keep it. I'm really happy to be the caretaker of it, but my collection is more focused on Army/Marine uniforms. This may be more appreciated by a Navy or military photograph collector, and could possibly fund a new edition to my collection.

sherburnedaughter Posted November 14, 2018 Share #13 Posted November 14, 2018 Hi! My father served on the USS Sherburne in WWII. I stumbled upon this post about your awesome thrift-store find when I googled the Sherburne on Veterans Day to see what I could find. I was so shocked to find a picture of my Dad in the ones you shared! I was wondering if you might be able to scan it in and post it since the one above is a bit blurry since its a picture of a picture. My Dad is 91 now and loves to tell us stories of his days on the Sherburne. Having this picture would mean a lot thanks in advance! (Its the photo all the way to the left on the 7th page down that you shared.)

Vincennes Posted February 2, 2019 Share #15 Posted February 2, 2019 Today at the Tulsa flea market I bought a book titled "My Life in the Service". It contains the hand written diary of James Arthur McCreary (849-30-81) who was a S1/c on the USS Sherburne (APA-205) from her commissioning to the end of 1945. The diary only goes from his enlistment to the end of 1944. But it does cover his time on the Sherburne from September 20 1944 to the end of 1944. It mentions a man overboard situation on Sept 26, 1944 while the ship was undergoing testing at sea. The man was rescued was George Bolton Kirkpatrick. The diary mentions that he lost his hat but did not loose his glasses. Paul
