Navy HGU-84 helmets w/ squadron insignia & patched flight suit

Today I picked up three HGU-84/P helicopter pilot/aircrew helmets, plus a box of patches from the pilot's career and a flight suit. I'll get some better photos up tomorrow, but I just wanted to share this with the matching HSL-45 insignia on the helmet, flight suit name tag and flight suit squadron patch (and there's also an HSL-45 detachment patch). There are two HGU-84/P helmets from the Navy and a third one that was bought for a planned helicopter crop dusting service: it's a black HGU-84/P with electronics and has never been used.

There are two visors - one clear, one tinted - attached by elastic straps. There is a cover attached by Velcro to whichever visor is not in use.

There is a pouch (the one with writing on it in the photo) which holds the battery for the night vision goggles (which I did not get).

One of these helmets is the first one issued to this pilot when he took helicopter training:

Beautiful display!

Yes, it was great to get not only his helmets, but a couple of his flight suits and a box of his flight suit patches. When I met with him yesterday I told him about a flight suit I recently found for a Naval flight officer: it had his name and wing direct embroidered. Well, this former helicopter pilot (he does fixed wing now) told me that a few weeks ago before he saw my newspaper ad he gave some embroidered flight suits to the local Goodwill: with name, wings, rank and unit on them! I went to the Goodwill but they were not to be scene: I have no doubt they got snapped up by Halloween costume buyers.

Here's the second helmet with another of his flight suits and patches:

I also got some more unit patches and these name patches (plus the ones shown in the flight suit photos above):

This is the third helmet that came with the lot: also an HGU-84, but with the sliding visor (missing the visor lock knob). This was bought for planned crop dusting service, but was never used:

  • 1 month later...

Great grouping, seems like he had an interesting career. USAF enlisted then Naval Aviator. I see he was a also a Navy C-12 pilot according to one of the nametags.
