Gregory Posted February 17, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2008 Hello, The question for the US Airborne gurus and hobbyists: The pic shows 82nd Abn Div para in Winter 1945. The para has German belt but what model is his belt-attached knife -- the US or German?; military or civvie? Best regards Greg
Andrei Posted February 17, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 17, 2008 Civilian without doubt. Pehaps german like the belt and the holster. My 2 cents.
Jeeper704 Posted February 17, 2008 Share #3 Posted February 17, 2008 Or maybe a PAL RH 36 knife or similar? Erwin
Gregory Posted February 17, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted February 17, 2008 Or maybe a PAL RH 36 knife or similar? Through one moment I thought the same but that sheath looks untypical...
Jeeper704 Posted February 17, 2008 Share #5 Posted February 17, 2008 Lots of sheaths were self- or custom-made. Especially when in use by troops like Paratroopers or Rangers or so. doyler Posted February 17, 2008 Share #6 Posted February 17, 2008 I would say a small german civilian/private purchase knife. The small type skinning knife so popular with deer/stag hunting.Handle appears to be the antler style.Could be an english made piece but I would bet its german. Many of these had nice german silver fittings and well made tooled leathes sheaths.I think Puma still offers one in a similiar style today. gunbarrel Posted February 21, 2008 Share #7 Posted February 21, 2008 I often thought it was a theater knife, like this one. This other one has a more typical aluminum and spacers theater handle, but it's a small one, like this paratrooper is wearing. http://cgi.ebay.com/WORLD-WAR-II-THEATER-K...emZ320220158038
Jeeper704 Posted February 21, 2008 Share #8 Posted February 21, 2008 It could be any knife. Apart from standard M3s, you have a lot of other combat or hunting knives (PAL RH 36, etc). And then I'm not counting the numerous self-made knives (from bayonets, civilian knives, etc). Erwin
Doughboy1918 Posted February 21, 2008 Share #9 Posted February 21, 2008 I notice he also has his M3 strapped to his leg. Maybe it's a souvenier.
