Hi All,

My father was a medal collector and he left behind a number of medals. This is a collection of Crosses of Honor, with 2 from the civil war (1 named), 1 from WWI, 1 from WWII, and one from Vietnam. The three modern ones are numbered, so perhaps some research could be done to find the recipient names?

Hello,

From what I have seen on eBay, those Veteran service versions of the UDC crosses sell for between $100-$250 on eBay. As for the Southern Crosses, if they are genuine (I am not an expert in them) the named ones can go for a small fortune. I would say you have an expensive little lot on your hands.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans should be able to help you with this, they do keep a database of these. I can't remember what my Cross is numbered but will try and get a pic of it this weekend and post it to show a modern one. (Mine was issued in 1995).

you'd have to have an expert check out the crosses. I know there are a few in the Gettysburg, PA area

Here are some for sale but you have to ask for the price.

http://www.historybr.../items/belt.htm

I got $350 for a VN one a while back and $250 or so for a WW2. They had some fraying and rubbing.

The named one depends on his service record and keep it until you have id'd him or hit a dead end.
I sold one once for a quick profit. turned out it was a kid that ran messages for Lee at Gettysburg, was wounded and mentioned in the daily report for valor. plus more that have forgotten and a good postwar career. I could have done a lot better if I had taken the time to research it.

You may also find that you have medals from several generations of the same family. it happens.

and just google Southern Cross of Honor, there is a ton of info including several rosters.

I have contacted the UDC in the past and given them #'s and they have been able to provide copies of the application document. I is $25 to $30 for each cross to be researched.

There HQ is in Richmond Va.

From their web site & request form, it kind of looked like you couldn't just give them a medal # or name on the medal and get information. They seemed to want a bunch more information to do a search. Am I just reading more into the form than it really needs?

Thanks,
Scott

I looked at their PDF form and it is designed for someone seeking a COH for their ancestor but in your case I suspect you could just give the name and then write on the form that you know the medal number. Certainly that should be enough info.
