Hi Everyone,

I just picked this grouping up. This is my first helmet with shield and mask so any help would be appreciated.

I have just started to do my research and found out the pilot started out as a NAP and retired as a LTC.

The white helmet is in nice shape but not sure which mask should go with it.

And it has its original bag !!

The leather helmet is nice but the goggles rubber has seen better days.

Opinions welcome

Thanks Dan

Great grouping...love that helmet! Those AN-6530s /B7s (?) are at a premium! The rubber face cushions frequently perish with the passage of time but replacements can be found from time to time on specialist dealers' sites such as here:

The helmet looks like an APH 6. There may be a sticker on the back with a date. Both masks would be right for the helmet. The mask with the wide hose is pretty standard. The other mask has a mini regulator. These are rare as chicken lips, and usually used on more high performance aircraft in the earlier days.

Jet helmet may be an APH-6A or C depending upon radio equipment. Vietnam war era. Both MS-22001 masks are going with. The left with the REDAR tube and mini regulator was used with comabt aircrafts. This version may be from the first part of the 60's. Relatively rare item. You may find a date on the right face of the mask.

O.W. "Johnny" Butner was an enlisted crewman in an ASW squadron with USS Ranger to patrol North Atlantic in ww2 and saw action at North Africa invasion in 1942. In 1943, he attented Radar School and than was assigned to CASU-22 (NAS Quonset Point) until 1946. Then, he was training for helicopter flying. His first assignment was HU-2 squadron as a Lt(jg). After that and during the 50's, he served with HS-11 (an helicopter AS squadron) and made several deployments with USS Wasp from 1957 to 1959. His last flying assignment was with VR-1 from 1962 to 1964. Lcdr Butner was discharged Jan. 1, 1965. He passed away in 2010.

(If you manage to sell the mask with REDAR, please let me know.)

After better examine of the mask, I would say that this one was used with the Douglas A-3 Skywarrior (unofficial nicknamed "The Whale"). The radio plug of your mask was not the one used on USN fighters or light attack aircraft.

Thanks Everyone,

Here is a photo of the inside of the helmet . It does not have any com gear inside .

But that's the way it was in the bag.

Wish I could find a photo of him.

Thanks for the info and advice about learning helmets.

Dan

Dan,

The foam was normally not present in APH helmets série. But these helmets were often personalized for more comfort. So, even some protections were added in your helmet, I'm pretty sure that they are original from the original owner.
