Confederate Belt Buckle Real Or Fake?

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,
I am hoping some of my fellow members can tell me if the buckle I have is real or fake. I do not collect Civil War but WW1 but this came in a large group of items I bought from a collection in Florida 5 or 6 years ago and I just found it again. The collector I bought from collected pre 1900 uniforms and had really an impressive collection. Many Civil War pieces and earlier.
He was selling off alot of his excess and later period items he had accumulated over the years. I bought amoung everything a collection of belt buckles going from the Indian Wars to WW1. There was one possible Civil War navy buckle and this CS buckle in the lot as well. I put it aside to find time to research it to see if it was a good one or fake (I think most are probably fakes). Now that I found it again I thought I would start here with my reserach. The buckles is lead filled as you can see. Scatrched into the lead is 1862. Plus some other markings I can't make out. It does show age. It measures about 3 1/4" long by 2" tall.
Can anyone help or make suggestions where to find more information.
All your help is apprecitaed.

I had one just like this. Unfortunately it was made in the 1970s. I have been told the South never used an oval CS belt buckle, especially one filled with lead. That being said I have seen a buckle like this recently in a military museum in a Civil War display.

sorry. However this belt buckel is NOT from the Civil War, shows all the signs of being made in the 60's-today. They are made for Civil War Living History groups, and have been around for quite some time. They are made just like the real ones, but the "tounge" is wrong and is the same that I have (mine is US and not CS however. Sorry for the bad news.

there it is...

This is a fantasy buckle based on the standard US buckle of the period, just switching a "C" for the "U". These became popular around the time of the Civil War Centennial. There were CS oval buckles made but they look nothing like this one, and they are very rare to boot. The most common Confederate buckles during the War were simple frame or harness buckles of various patterns.
