STOLEN TODAY 9/11: Retired Navy Captain's Award Documents

My in-law's had their house broken into today. They were gone, but came home to find their house ransacked...every drawer had been pulled out and gone through. They called the police and within minutes, six deputy sheriffs arrived and went through the house. Remarkably, nothing seemed to be missing. My in-laws went through the house and nothing was missing...the guns, TVs, computers, jewelry, etc...all of it was still there. Strangely, the only thing missing were my father in law's medal certificates in their blue and green issue folders from his 33 years in the Navy! The robbers also took a couple empty medal presentation boxes as well (they didn't take the medals because I have them on display in my collection!)

The sheriff deputies were pretty astounded...they'd never seen anything like it before. Oddly, my in-laws also had their lawnmower stolen from their shed last week. My mother in law was home and saw a white pickup truck drive off with it and called the police. Nothing else was taken. Today, a neighbor saw a white pickup truck hanging out in front of their house while the housekeeper was there, and another saw the same truck drive away from the property after the housekeeper was gone (they live on multi-acre properties out in our rural area...) Could it be the same truck? Who knows...but why would they only take the lawnmower first, and then only take military medal certificates the second time? Absolutely mind-boggling. Needless to say, my mother in law is getting the driveway gate and improved alarm system she's been wanting for a while... :pinch:

For anyone up in Northern California, please keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist and at flea markets in case you run across any of my father in laws medal documents. There are about ten, including 2x LOM, DSSM, DMSM, MSM, JCOM, etc...his last name is McMichael and they range in rank from LCDR to CAPT (he didn't do anything spectacular; commanded a ship and a couple bases, and spent time at the Pentagon...not anything that's "high dollar" as far as collectors are concerned...)

Any help in finding the documents would surely be appreciated!

Dave

I hope that your father-in-laws will get back his documents and the thieves jailed. He should be cautious about an identity theft that could be perpetrated with his stolen official documents.

Best wishes for the recovery of ALL of the items stolen. I can't begin to think of what goes on in a thief's mind, perhaps they'll be back looking for the medals??

You know, that's my wife's exact thought...that the thieves would try identity theft. But there's no more identifying information on an official medal document than his full name...there was plenty more information available on his office desk (bills, personal papers, etc.) that the thieves also pillaged...but didn't take anything. I'm still scratching my head, but I've told him to keep a good eye on his credit scores though...

Dave - strange - Very strange! Didn't Award Docs back in the day have ssns on them? Probably wise to alert the Credit Bureaus just in case. Hoping for positive results.......Bob

I just checked...some of mine do some don't. I'd agree with bobgee on this one. Have your FiL get his credit checked/monitored.

Actually, these were just the color certificates so none of them had his SSN...thus, they were pretty useless as far identity theft. If the people were trying to do that, they would have been better off taking taking his computer or stuff in his desk...but it was all untouched. However, one can never be too cautious. Still strange....

Hope the stolen items are recovered in short order Dave........still pretty unnerving when you know that someone was in YOUR house without invitation......a feeling of violation.

Wish you and your family all the best in getting things back in order.

Dave,

That is the craziest thing I ever heard involving theft like that.

Does the truck have anything to do with the house keeper ?

Dang...this was from five years ago, but they've never been found. Here's a bump to bring them back up!
