MWalsh Posted August 26, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 26, 2012 A friend picked up this USMC general officer's portrait. Its a great image, large, about 2 feet tall, and quite nicely done, no doubt a colorized portrait done from a photograph. So the million dollar question - anyone have any idea who this USMC Brigadier General actually is? My freidn had no idea, and noting on the back of the portrait either. Thoughts? Thanks! Jack's Son Posted August 26, 2012 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2012 Judging by his ribbons, he was in the service in 1941. He has the Legion of Merit, American Defense Service Medal W/Star, American theater Medal, Asian Defense w/(?)4 stars, Victory Medal, Occupation Medal and what appears to be the National Defense Medal. Jack's Son Posted August 28, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 28, 2012 This is from Quantico.............Ok, after going through the entire list of BGen's for 1945 (since the number of Asiatic-Pacific Campaign stars suggests is later than 1941), we've settled on Nimmer. Can't be 100% sure, but it's the best we can come up with.
MWalsh Posted August 28, 2012 Author Share #9 Posted August 28, 2012 Wow Robin! I think you have a winner there! The eyebrows, the flare to the sides of the nose, I think it is him! I may have to call my friend and see if he wants to pay for the research to confirm those awards and see if that also leads towards confirmation. Thanks for going through all the searching !!! MWalsh Posted August 28, 2012 Author Share #11 Posted August 28, 2012 Found this about General Nimmer: http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/drnimmer.htm Intrestingly enough, I just took a closer look at my original picture and it is actually a Bronze Star with "V" device on his ribbon bar, not a Legion of Merit - I had thought it was an LoM originally too. The original shows ribbons for the Bronze Star, American Defense, Pacific Campaign, American Campaign, WW2 Victory, Occupation, and National Defense. That National Defense and Occupation places this portrait from post-WW2, Nimmer retired in July 1947, too early to have gotten a NDSM. He also was a Major General on retirement. Drats! I was SO sure this was Nimmer! MW

MW I was sure also. Even if that portrait were of him, the ribbons he is wearing would only be a selection of his entitlement, and as has been pointed out, he retired before the NDSM. :pinch:
