One of the most important (but most often overlooked) military jobs is that of a unit Sergeant Major. I served in the infantry in Germany, the 101st Airborne, and the 82nd Airborne. As an NCO, one of the first people I met in each unit was the Battalion Command Sergeant Major. A Sergeant Major set the tone of the unit, and literally was the whip that kept it in shape.
