Stinger Gunner USMC Posted January 31, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 31, 2008 Well after some interest from everyone on the forum I decided to dig out the box of Korean War negatives from a Marine The mans dam was MSgt Wm. Ross. He was acting Sgt Major of 1st Engineers, 1st FMF in Korea I just started at the top of the pile, scanning the negatives and this was the first 17 out of 205 negatives! Bob Hudson Posted January 31, 2008 Share #18 Posted January 31, 2008 What great photos. They would be a great resource for details of Marine uniform details in Korea. The nice thing about negatives is that you can scan them at very high resolution so you can end up with decent-sized images of small details. One photo I was interested in seeing was the one of the Marine wearing the alpaca-lined vest. Long thought by many to be Air Forcevests, some of us on the forum have found proof they were a indeed a Marine Corps issue item in Korea and in fact the only pictures we could find are of Marines wearing them (the Army Air Force had something similar but it seems to have had buttons instead of a zipper and had pockets. Here's the thread: http://www.usmilitariaforum.com/forums/ind...alpaca,and,vest This is probably the first color photo I've seen of a Marine wearing one of these vests. Stinger Gunner USMC Posted January 31, 2008 Author Share #19 Posted January 31, 2008 Forum Support, Here is a cropped in shot of the Marine wearing the vest you mentioned This is about as close as I can get without loosing quality. I scaned these photos at a mid range quality not knowing what was on them. A guy I work with has a darkroom and does BW photography. He said he would help me make prints of all of these photos
Stinger Gunner USMC Posted January 31, 2008 Author Share #20 Posted January 31, 2008 There are about 25 large format negatives that I cannot make scans of but a few are of Msgt Ross in his dress blues after he returned from korea and by holding it up to the light I can make out his ribbon rack. It is as follows: Nav Commendation W/ "V", Good cookie with 2 stars, American Theatre, WWII victory, Natl Def, Korean Svc with 3 stars, UN Korea, and Korea PUC w/o a frame. He also has a Rifle Expert badge. Ross was NCOIC on the USS Tanner (AGS-15) his thanksgiving 1954 menu was with the negatives (The ship was in port at Iskenderun, Turkey at the time) His approval for medical discharge following open heart surgery dated March 1960 is also with the grouping After Korea Ross was a member of 2nd Topographical Map Company at Camp Lejeune, and NCOIC of the visual art unit, training aids library Quantico, VA
BEAST Posted January 31, 2008 Share #21 Posted January 31, 2008 What size negatives are these and how did you scan them? I have several WWI negatives that I would like to scan.
Stinger Gunner USMC Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #22 Posted February 1, 2008 These were 120 film. it is 2.5" x 3.75". My scanner will scan 35mm, 120 and slides. It is a cannon 8600F but I know there are other scanners out there that scan negatives

It is a cannon 8600F but I know there are other scanners out there that scan negatives With 120 negatives you can really get some detail - if you scan them as grayscale images with about a 7MB file size (equal to about an 8X10 image at 300dpi) you can then copy small details at a nice size. R Michael Posted February 1, 2008 Share #24 Posted February 1, 2008 Great set of images thanks for sharing. Beast the cheapest scanner, that I can find, that scans multiple sized negatives retails for about $500.00.. I hope one day I can get one as now I "cheat" with mine by scanning the negative as if it is a 35mm slide then invert the image to get a positive. Time consuming and frustrating in that it can't scan the image. Mike
Stinger Gunner USMC Posted February 1, 2008 Author Share #25 Posted February 1, 2008 My scanner was no where near $500. Maybe $150? about a year ago
