manayunkman Posted July 11, 2012 Author Share #27 Posted July 11, 2012 BOOT CAMP Lowe told me a story of a skinny shy guy in boot camp who was so home sick he would cry to his mom every night. They didn't think he would make it and took bets on when he would drop out. But somehow he made it. Fast forward to Iwo. Lowe is now an infantryman and a Japanese MG strong point has them pinned down. Several are badly wounded and they are still taking hits. Suddenly out of nowhere this guy runs up to their position. He has no shirt on, bulging muscles and a couple of links MG amo draped over his shoulder. Fully exposed to enemy fire he barks out for several guys to come with him and take the Japanese position ( which he did ). Who do you think it was but that cry baby kid from boot camp. Lowe told me his name but I forgot it. By the way there are 2 camo helmets in the background og one of the picks.
p2tharizo Posted July 11, 2012 Share #28 Posted July 11, 2012 Great stuff! Keep it coming! I don't know how you always find the good stuff! Talking to an Iwo vet--or any WWII vet is getting rarer by the day. It's good to see someone that appreciates it for what it is. Thanks for taking the time to share. manayunkman Posted July 11, 2012 Author Share #39 Posted July 11, 2012 In this picture we have some of Lowe's badges and a second set of dog tags. They look like they are attached to a grenade ring. While on grave detail Lowe was an avid souvenir hunter. There are 2 cigarette cases with the cigarettes still in them. A little wood pipe. No silly comments please. And a lighter. Some snap shots as well of Iwo. The one with the Good Year blimp is state side.
manayunkman Posted July 11, 2012 Author Share #40 Posted July 11, 2012 LST 84 is one of the main reasons that Amtrak drivers were no longer needed. They could bring more supplies ashore much faster. You can also see an Amtrak on the beach.
