patches Posted July 10, 2012 Share #2 Posted July 10, 2012 The Marines wore them, yes, these are the first run of this type, they were later replaced when the Marines changed the appearance of their Enlistedmen's rank that incorporated the Crossed M1 Garands, Here a very Small Photo of Jack Webb in the DI, He is wearing this type, a Technical Sergeant one,( The title of Gunnery Sergeant wasn,t restored 1959-60) both on his cover and collar points, sorry for such a tiny Image, it was the only one I could find of him in utilities in this 1957 Movie. If any one has a larger image of him please do post it.
topdcnut Posted July 11, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted July 11, 2012 They came with a navy group from the same period, so that is what I hoped to hear.
Lee Ragan Posted July 11, 2012 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2012 These would have become obsolete in 1958 but perhaps were actually worn a little longer.

patches Posted July 11, 2012 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2012 these were the first type of metal chevrons ever used by the US military Thats right and the Army copied them for use as subdued collar pins in South Vietnam around 1967, where as by 1969 they became standard Army wide. Lee Ragan Posted July 13, 2012 Share #11 Posted July 13, 2012 these were the first type of metal chevrons ever used by the US military According to Emerson's book "Chevrons", metal enlisted rank insignia was first used by the U.S. Army as early as 1945. See the chart on page 207 of his book. One of the pin-on chevrons was a T-4. These early pin-on rank were normally used on things such as field caps and were not officially authorized, but were made & used. Larger enamelled metal chevrons appeared for wear on helmet liners in the 1950's. (Not only the Army used the large enamelled chevrons, the Air Force had them too!)
