I have 2 green wool Marine overcoats. Quartermaster stamps are not real clear but I think they are both 1942-43. One has the faux cloth belt sewn onto the back. The other has the large belt loops. As I have photos of Marines in China with leather belts on their overcoats I thought these were pre and early War. Here are photos of my two with their date stamps. What is the story on these? Thanks Richard

No one expressed an opinion re: Different belt design/vs loops but same contract years. I think large belt loops are a carryover from the "old Corps" days so I'll keep that one for me and the other one with cloth belt in the back and corporal stripes both sleeves as well as Chinese ? Theater tickets in the pocket is now in our FS section. Richard

Hi Richard,

I don't understand exactly what you're looking for but if I remember well, the overcoat without belt loops is the early model then the belt loops appeared, probably being easier to manufacture

Considering your two overcoats, it seems that the fiscal year 1942-43 was probably the period of transition. Just my .02 cents.

Cheers,

Etienne

1942 was the transition year for USMC overcoats. In that year, belt loops for the cordovan/dark brown service belt were replaced with the half belt in the rear and the pockets became verticle slash as shown above vs. the prior horizontal flapped variety.
