My custom flight helmet - vintage 1982

Below are some pictures of my flight helmet. It was custom-fitted for me by one of our life-support techs. I had to go to Tyndall AFB FL to have the inner shell poured to fit my head....a decidedly unpleasant experience. He then lined it with thin foal and black leather. He creasted the earphone protectors from foam and leather and also fitted them to my head. Finally, he died the white nylon chin and nape straps black and when the extra step of making black leather covers for them as well. The nylon straps have faded to a dark purple color over the decades gut, otherwise, it's still holding up. The woodland cover is nothing more than a standard helmet cover stretched to fit the flight helmet shell.....somewhat.

The inside. This particular LS tech did a fantastic job on this helmet. Sadly, a year or so later he was killed in an auto wreck while driving home to visit his invalid father.

The helmet looks to be a USAF HGU-26/P with a MBU-5/P oxygen mask. The CRU-60/P connector at the

end of the mask hose connects the oxygen mask to the aircraft oxygen supply hose and the emergency

oxygen bailout bottle hose.
