BEAST Posted January 21, 2008 Share #1 Posted January 21, 2008 During the 1930s, my Mom and my Grandmother belonged to the American Legion Auxillery. During this time, she decorated this handmade train car. The detail is hard to see on my photos but there is an American Legion Symbol by the "ONTO BERLIN", a 37th Division marking and a cutout reading "40 Hommes ET 8 Chevaux". "WHEN DO WE EAT? and "ETAT DE NORD" are also hand lettered. It looks like roofing nails were used on the front and rear bumpers. THere are only two wheels and no decorations on the other side. bigbee Posted November 7, 2008 Share #2 Posted November 7, 2008 That is just too cool!! I am a big fan of the "40et8". Grew up riding in parades in the Voiture at Flint, MI. Wish I had some pics of their set up.
GIl Sanow Posted November 7, 2008 Share #3 Posted November 7, 2008 There is (was?) a restored 40 et 8 car at ONG's Camp Perry at Port Clinton, OH some years back. The only reason I say was (?) is that a tornado destroyed the big old mess hall there some years back, and the car was only a few hundred yards away. 37thguy Posted November 22, 2008 Share #4 Posted November 22, 2008 It's still there, they just moved it from around the flag pole to very near where the Mess Hall once stood. It's now under cover. One the best examples remaining of a WW 1 French boxcar. http://bp2.blogger.com/_t5tcTK_KEs8/SIj27c...-h/IMG_8839.JPG
