Ahh... is that what they are - saves me looking them up!

Collectsmedals - do you know what unit he ended up in after the 509th were disbanded in early 1945? That might explain the DI's.

Cheers,
Glen.

Actually he was in the 112th before the war, I have a Company H 112th Infantry Division (rifles) Thanksgiving Day menu from 1941 1st Army maneuvers in Lilesville, North Carolina that lists him as one of the Company's corporals.

He was rated as a qualified parachutist December 19, 1942. You will not find a Parachute School certificate dated much earlier then that.

His discharge reads, "Francis A Dean, Private Company A 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion was separated from the military service of the United States of America by Honorable Discharge on 14 May 1945 at Moore General Hospital Swannonoa North Carolina."

He was wounded for the second time in Italy in late 1943 and was in hospital for the rest of the war.

Just goes to show strange items can end up together, if you found those 112th DIs in a box of 509 stuff you could assume they had just been tossed in later.

This is my first post to this great site so please excuse my photography and editing. Here's a few ovals I have in my collection. Nothing earth shattering, but I would like to get peoples' oppion on the one one with the armor triangle as far as unit and time period. From Scott Hughes' 'A complete Guide To Flashes and Ovals', I was able to come up with 11th Recon Co., 76th ATB or 710th ATB. I have found to guide to be great if you collect post WWII ovals, but kind of frustrating for WWII era ones.

Patchman,

I have an oval similar to your armor oval. Its attached to a hat. Unfortunately it appears to be a kids hat.

I am happy to do so! I only ask for a few things in return:

1) Please upload all photos to the forum so they never dissapear
2) Post detail photos - I know I would like to see more. There are a few collection photos with LOTS of wings but I can not see the details ;)
3) last but not least - if you see a missing photo and you are the poster or know the poster please have them fix it (see item #1)

If anyone needs help with fixing a photo let me know.

Cheers & KEEP POSTING! :)

John

Here's my collection of Jump Wings and Ovals so far. I felt I should include my glider wing as well due to the combat star affixed to it. The ovals all came separate from each other minus the one at the bottom of the picture (from a 509th vet)
IMPORTANT NOTE: The 504th Oval is a late 40's example

It (worryingly) is... but it doesn't half look like one of a batch that I had made up from my own pattern by a company in Liverpool. It has a certain quality to it... :ermm:

1944... can you send me some more pics of this oval without the wings please? Would hate to think that you've ended up with one of my repros...!

Cheers,
Glen.

I have some nice airborne stuff posted on my webpage. Easier than posting the individual items one at a time.
