The 2nd Infantry Division embarked from NY en route to the UK in October ’43. Whilst in the UK they spent some months training in Wales in preparation for D-Day. In fact, elements of the division were based just a few miles from where I live today. So, I decided to put together a display representing a hypothetical 2nd ID infantryman as he might have appeared at that time by way of a tribute to all those young men who eventually landed at Utah Beach on D-Day +1. All of the items seen here are original WW2 USGI. The basic uniform comprises of an OD wool shirt and pants with rough-out boots and leggings. The OD field jacket (with original patch etc) is a first pattern “Parsons jacket”. The helmet is a fixed-bail with British netting. Finally, the M1 rifle is a WW2 production Winchester. Everything is in mint, or near mint condition.

Very nice!

Were the T-handle shovels painted green later on in the war?

Very nice display Ian. Thanks for posting this. Newer / younger members often ask the question of what was worn and how. This is a great example to answer those questions. Now we just need to remember it is here so we can link to it. I'm pinning it to help keep it handy.

Fantastic Ian! An antidote to the idea that military history in Wales consists solely of Owain Glyndwr and castles!.

Matt.

Thanks Matt and Harlan. I have some research data on the units, including the 2nd ID, who were based in and around the port of Barry, here in South Wales. HQ was at St Donat's Castle a few miles along the coast which, at the time, was owned by the American newspaper magnate, William Randolph Hirst...the basis for Orson Welles' character "Citizen Kane".
