post-8535-1335989372.jpgI wanted to share a great Civil War Corps badge I aquired some 30 years ago from an estate. The badge cross is constructed of a beautiful green enamel (indicating Light Division) and real gold. The badge is engraved:

Front: PRESENTED TO COL. A. COBB MC BY THE OFFICERS

OF THE 5th WIS. VOL. AS A TOKEN OF THEIR ESTEEM

Bars: LIGHT DIV. and 6th CORPS

Back: Williamsburgh May 5th, 1862

Chickuhominy, to James River, June and July 1862

Antietam Sept. 17th, 1862

Fredericksburg Dec. 13th, 1862

I was very fortunate to locate and obtain through the United States National Archives, a copy of an original photograph of Col. Cobb actually wearing the badge. I believe the studio portrait photo was taken by Matthew Brady, the famous Civil War photographer. Later during the war Col. Cobb became a member of the US Congress and promoted to brevet General. I believe it is one of the most attractive Civil War Corps badges to have surfaced.

One does have to ask where did all the great engravers go?

Without a doubt it's a one of a kind, thanks for sharing

  • 1 year later...

I wanted to share another photo found in the National Archives of Col. Cobb wearing his 6th Corps badge. I suspect it was taken during the same sitting as the first picture I posted last year.

Great badge with beautiful engraving. The documentation of the period photograph really makes the piece.

Thanks for sharing.
