FW12 Posted December 14, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 14, 2007 Hello there! I recently picked up a great photo album and four scrapbooks belonging to a 2nd Infantry Division Captain. The wife made the scrapbooks with clippings form the Atlanta Journal (scrapbooks start June 6, 1944 and goes through the end of the war). These are huge and have hundreds if not thousands of clippings, many being the entire front page of the paper. Anyhow, the photo album is what's of interest. Many of the photos are of Captain John "Jack" Gray. Some of him in battle gear, others in pinks and greens as well as tans. One of the pictures is of him being awarded the Silver Star. Standing two men down from him is Major General Walter Robertson (misidentified on the photo as General Robinson). I'll post photos later when I can scan them in, but I was also curious if it would be possible to get Gray's Silver Star citation? I'll be put up some pictures soon! Wailuna Posted December 14, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 14, 2007 The Silver Star citation will be found on the General Orders awarding the medal, which was most likely published by 2nd Infantry Division. Your best bet for obtaining a copy of Army General Orders is National Archives at College Park, Maryland. To make your request, you need to know the General Orders number, issuing Headquarters, and date. If you are lucky enough to have Capt. Gray's report of separation, the information will be there (in section #33 or 55). The entry will look something like this: "Silver Star Medal GO175 Hq 2d Inf Div 16 Jul 45" If you don't have the ROS, you can request the information from NMPRC at St. Louis (good luck). Or, try D-Day Militaria, which indexes award citations by division (but not 2nd ID's yet).
