VMI88 Posted December 11, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2007 I picked this interesting photo up yesterday -- it depicts a Rear Admiral wearing submarine insignia. Most of the inscription is indecipherable (at least to me) but he signed it "Skipper". The envelope the photo came in is labeled "Admiral Metcalf". I've tentatively identified the officer as RADM Martin K. Metcalf, who served as Director of Convoy and Routing in the Navy Department throughout World War II. A poor quality photo I found online (http://ibiblio.org/hyperwar/USN/Admin-Hist/011-Convoy/011-Convoy-AA.html) appears to depict the same officer, though he's older in the online photo. I'm sending off to NARA for information and hopefully a better photo of RADM Martin Metcalf, but any assistance in the meantime would be appreciated!
